School Assignment - Presentation on Dr. Paul

In my AP US Government class we received an assignment to group up in pairs and make a 5 minute (maximum) presentation on a candidate for the 2008 election. Obviously, I picked Ron Paul . My teacher knows how strongly I support Paul, and warned me not to get preachy. There are approximately 25 people in the class, with 23 being eligible to vote in both the Arizona primaries and the 2008 election. I wanted some input on how best to go about my presentation. I was going to purchase a pack of Student Slim Jims, but at $13 including delivery it isn't a feasible option.

Any input is appreciated, this is my chance to get some converts

no draft, get out of social security (bc it will fail before we get anything), get out of iraq, protect liberty (no regulation of the internet, get rid of patriot act, restore habeaus corpus, no warrantless spying), end the war on drugs and let states decide their own drinking ages.

Can you use microsoft powerpoint? What has your group decided doing? Posterboard?

I think the most persuasive message is to show that the constitution is the basis of our government and that Ron Paul defends the constitution and follows what the founding fathers' urged for a free government i.e. states' rights, gun rights etc. This shows Ron Paul has some basis to his views and will demonstrate that you are knowledgeable about the constitution. You will probably not be successful changing someone's opinion on the issues in five minutes so just present the constitution which is something people can't disagree with.

I recommend doing something that is visual. Powerpoint is good but for a group project its probably not interactive for everyone to work on. The best thing to do is get started and play around and things will come to you. I would get interesting quotes from the founding fathers and tie it to Ron Paul.

Is the presentation supposed to advocating for the candidate or just informational? Obviously this would make a big difference...

mention while other candidates are often lawyers, lobbiests and politicians, paul is a dr, 10 term congressman, prize winning austrian economist, and constitutional scholar.

mention many cia reports show we have more terrorists today than we originally had before the war on terror. note the world's expert on suicide terrorism (robert pape) and the world's expert on bin laden (michael scheuer) both fully endorsed ron paul. mention the costs of this war (and entering others) may come at a draft - has already come at the expense of some liberties, and a ridiculous amount of money that they and their children will be paying for. when taxes don't cover it they borrow money from china, when that's not enough the fed prints it.

hello fed! what a stellar transition. state how paul is the only candidate in a long time to address monetary policy - mention that austrian economics explains the creation and burst of bubbles (.com, housing) by too easy credit... which we are fixing today with too easy credit! point out that economists say government central planning and price fixing are ridiculous... yet some still seem to accept relying on some smart guy's word at fixing the price of money, instead of letting the free market do it. show how ron paul would introduce another gold backed currency, and eventually the free market would merely choose the better currency - which would likely be gold, and abandonment of the fed. note that this is how all programs and departments he wishes to get rid of would be handled - smoothly and intelligently, not wildly or sudden as some of his detractors misrepresent and claim.

then you could go onto other shiz... social security they'll never see any money they put in, it's failing socialistic system that should be weaned off of and removed, not band-aided... etc. good luck. go over 5 minutes and tell the teacher you'll take the B if it gets you 23 votes ;D

I really like all the advice from The Founding Fathers. I really like how they warned us of all the things we are facing now. Maybe focus on how Ron Paul is Founding Father material... it could be a history lesson as well!

1. To the best of your knowledge will Ron Paul: Increase the size of the US Military, Keep the size of the US Military at about the level it currently is, or decrease the size of the US military?
(understand that I am not referring to military spending based on any current conflicts, but I am referring to his plans for our Armed Forces in general..troops,bases,equipment,planes,ships..whichever forms of armament apply to the force in general)

We have over 700 military bases in ~130 countries. When Ron Paul uses the word 'Empire' he is very accurate.

Our ability to protect American land is weakened because we have way too many troops all over the world. Ron Paul would strengthen our actual defense by eliminating foolish, aggressive military spending and action overseas.

2. To the best of your knowledge,how would you define Ron Paul's "non interventionist" view on Foreign Policy(if you would even call it that)?
I'm not concerned as much as it applies to Terrorism, but as it applies to US interests abroad. Does he have a proactive plan to deal with modern, aggressive and sophisticated tactics that may be used by other growing nations.

3. Domestic Security. In the event that staying away from the bee hive doesn't work, and if we are hypothetically attacked within our own borders again in a way that effects our country and it's mindset like 9/11 did...how will Ron Paul deal with this; to the best of your knowledge? Or has he considered that just getting out of the middle east won't work?

The root cause of 911 (according to the 911 commission, Ron Paul, and our CIA) is 'blow-back' from our aggressive foreign policy.

When we eliminate the root cause of the attacks, we will not be in danger.

Important: Google "Swiss are neutral" (or similar) and find out:

1) The last time they were in a war, and
2) Their history of being free from terror attacks.

4. What Leadership qualities does Ron Paul exhibit that make you believe he would be an effective President? Concentrate on effectiveness, not intelligence level or ideas, or vision.

He has huge numbers of people excited about returning America to greatness through real, individual freedom.
This is a strong form of leadership.

Well if it's supposed to be informational only, I wouldn't just try to sell him. One way you could do both is to really highlight the differences between him and the neocons that have taken over the Republican Party, and how they are more similar to a typical Democrat than to Ron Paul. From the perspective of an outsider, that would probably be important. You could also mention his record fundraising and incredible momentum. Maybe you could go into how people are really surprised by him because they expect all politicians to flip-flop and be influenced by lobbyists. Focus on how unusual he is, not how great he is. It will be informational, but it will still sell RP.
