Don't "fear" guns but "respect" them.
A lot of anti-gun folks don't like the idea of someone else (no matter how law-abiding) carrying a gun because they, their self, do not feel they can be trusted with a gun - therefore nobody else can be trusted.
Others are scared of guns because they've seen too many Hollywood movies (unrealistic portrayals of guns) or read/seen too many sensationalist media articles.
But to answer your question... whatever reason you feel you're scared of guns... you shouldn't buy one (initially) but you should go to a range (try going with a friend who has shot before) and RENT a small caliber pistol (a .22 would be a good start). Try a few rounds (a .22 will have virtually no recoil) until you feel comfortable with it. Once comfortable, move up to a .32 or something. Keep working you way up until you find the caliber that you feel most comfortable with - then buy one!!
Good advice.
