This other thread in Grassroots Central highlights an interesting phenomenon from today and yesterday: South Carolina State Senator Tom Davis tweeting extremely positive things about Ron Paul and retweeting requests for an endorsement of Ron Paul.
To say the least, this is a big deal. Tom Davis is influential in South Carolina conservative circles. How influential?
From FITSNews blog post in August of last year (emphasis mine):
A story about the presidential courting of Tom Davis from the Hilton Head Island Packet, a newspaper in South Carolina, is quoted in the story, and I quote the Packet here (emphasis mine):
He was also named last year one of "50 Politicos to watch" by Politico. Here is the short write-up in full (emphasis mine):

Just what has Tom Davis been tweeting today? Well....

From FITSNews blog post in August of last year (emphasis mine):
Closer to home, though, it’s looking as though the endorsement of S.C. Sen. Tom Davis – who is widely-presumed to be Graham’s future U.S. Senate opponent in 2014 – is almost as coveted as the blessing of DeMint (and perhaps even more coveted than the blessing of Haley, whose approval ratings are in the toilet).
A story about the presidential courting of Tom Davis from the Hilton Head Island Packet, a newspaper in South Carolina, is quoted in the story, and I quote the Packet here (emphasis mine):
...Many of the top-tier GOP primary candidates -- including U.S. Reps. Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman -- have either met privately with Davis or plan to do so soon.
That presidential candidates are courting Davis personally -- treatment typically reserved for governors and Statehouse officers -- is a measure of his growing influence among South Carolina conservatives.
He was also named last year one of "50 Politicos to watch" by Politico. Here is the short write-up in full (emphasis mine):
Republican state Sen. Tom Davis’s career could have ended two years ago when his friend, former GOP Gov. Mark Sanford, publicly thanked him for his support during an emotional confession of an affair.
Forever linked to one of South Carolina’s most embar-rassing political scandals, Davis was left for dead by much of the state’s political establishment. But he has regained his reputation as one of the state’s leading fiscal conservatives.
Sanford’s now ex-wife, Jenny, emerged as the immediate political winner from the scandal, as her brand now trumps her former husband’s thanks to a popular book and frequent buzz that she herself desires elected office. But Davis gets much of the credit for the popular fiscal reforms Sanford pushed as governor, and his endorsement will carry some of the weight the ex-governor’s might have without the ugly baggage.
