I do occasionally listen to Savage if I'm driving or if I'm surfing the YouTube looking for political stuff. I stopped completely when he dedicated a whole episode to bashing Ron Paul, and he refuses to take Ron Paul callers anymore.
He is an entertainer in the tradition of Andy Kaufman, Sacha Baron Cohen, and Lady Gaga (living the gimmick 24/7 and blurring reality).
There have been many theories about what he really believes: is he a liberal who is doing a parody of right wing extremists? Is he manic depressive? Or is he really a Barry Goldwater conservative, who also wants to push morality and war?
His most inflammatory comments have been directed at Muslims, gays, immigrants, and pot smokers. It's also easy to read in-between the lines and catch racism (directed at Black-Americans that use government programs).
If you take away the hate speech, he does offer a different spin on current events than Hannity, Rush, Beck, and O'Reilly. He is an independent voice but he continues to cross the line and comes off as a truly paranoid, deranged, and fascist person.
Other times (depending on his mood) he acts like a guy from da Bronx and does a Woody Allen neurotic schtick.
His other mode is to sell his books- real hard. He is a creative and intelligent guy. His books are conservative, and he's generally anti-government. But is a right-winger in every sense. He wants to legislate morality. He's not a libertarian, although he says all of those great things about The Constitution. 99% of the people don't realize that most (if not all) of the time he is playing a character.
