Does anyone know what is Ron Paul's policy towards Russia?

MOSCOW, January 19 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's top military commander said on Saturday that the country is prepared to use its nuclear weapons to defend itself and allies in the event of a severe external threat.

The Chief of the Russian General Staff, Gen. Yury Baluyevsky, told a conference at the Academy of Military Sciences in Moscow: "We do not intend to attack anyone, but consider it necessary that all our partners clearly understand, and that no one has any doubts, that the Armed Forces will be used to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, including preventative action, and including the use of nuclear weapons."

Baluyevsky's comments come amid growing tensions between Russia and NATO over the alliance's expansion into the former Eastern Bloc, the United States' plans to deploy missile defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic, and Moscow's increasingly assertive military stance.

Russia resumed strategic bomber patrol flights over the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans last August, and on December 12, 2007 imposed a unilateral moratorium on the Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty, a key arms reduction pact.

Baluyevsky said that in order to protect Russia's interests, military force "can and must be used" when "all other means prove ineffective."

Programs to develop Russia's military must be closely linked to national fiscal planning, "taking into account the state's economic resources," he said.

he would not threaten them, so they would have no cause to use weapons against us.

Guys, I think this makes it pretty obvious that we MUST take military action. Make them meet their 72 virgins at the gates of hell if need be. Anything less would be isolationism that allowed Hitler to come to power and I ate Thanksgiving dinner with the troops and they want us to win.

I'm quite sure every country that has nuclear weapons are "prepared" to use them to defend themselves...and have been for 50 years. This is not news.

Russia has always been willing to use force to defend themselves or their allies. It sounds like posturing, both to help deter deployment of a missile shield in eastern Europe and to counter US threats of a first strike in Iran.

The most interesting part of the statement to me is "including preventative action" ... I wonder what they're thinking on that one.

This 72 virgin thing is something from Qaran, Goldwater Conservative. But Russia is not a Muslim country.

Russia, Belarus defense chiefs sign communications deal
19/ 01/ 2008

MOSCOW, January 19 (RIA Novosti) - The defense ministers of Russia and Belarus signed an agreement on Saturday to set up a communications system between regional groupings of the countries' Armed Forces.

Russia's Anatoly Serdyukov and his Belarusian counterpart Leonid Maltsev met in Moscow for talks on bilateral military cooperation.

Serdyukov said last year that the development of military ties with Russia's ex-Soviet neighbor have been encouraged by NATO's eastward expansion and U.S. missile shield plans, and that Russia would continue to supply arms and military hardware to Belarus at subsidized rates and on a priority basis.

The countries are developing a unified air defense system in line with plans to create a Union State, which they have been working on since 1997, envisioning a common economic, customs, and political space.

It does bring up some cocerns associated with Dr. Pauls foreign policy... it is his weakest link (as far as most Republicans are concerned.) But rest assured this is Russia playing hard ball with Islamofascists not Europe or the USA>

And the media totally ignores this report. Hmmmm....

The problem I see is that conventional armies are very expensive to use. Nukes are cheap. Since the US's bankruptcy is being exposed I think that using nukes will be very attractive to OUR political leaders. That is why "nothing is off the table."

Playing world dominator is very expensive, especially when you don't produce much in the way of goods to trade for your oil, tvs, cars, cell phones, etc.

BBC reports:
Gen Baluyevsky sees a threat from countries seeking global hegemony

Russia's military chief of staff has said Moscow is ready to use force, including pre-emptively and with nuclear weapons, to defend itself.
In a speech to a military conference broadcast on state-run cable TV, Gen Baluyevsky said there were potential threats to Russia from international terrorism or countries seeking global or regional hegemony.

"We do not intend to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the world community to clearly understand ... that to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Russia and its allies, military forces will be used, including preventively, including with the use of nuclear weapons," he said.

I understand that lack of information in Western media about the events that take place in former Soviet Block make people in US wonder - what's up with this Russian general? Why would he made such a statement? Correct?

Well, obviously you won't get the answer from people at CNN, MSNBC, ABC or Fox News. All they do is report about Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and "new" Osama bin Laden tapes.

The situation, however, is pretty dangerous.

Today's situation reminds me of 1941, the year when Germany invaded the Soviet Union.

To see the whole picture one needs to go back to 1980s (the time of Perestroika).....

The article NATO Build-Up On Russia's Borders by Valentin Zorin will take you back to era of Gorbachev when West was ultra-friendly with the Soviet Union....

It was then.

NATO Build-Up On Russia's Borders
Worst Treachery Since Munich 1938

by Valentin Zorin

Allow me to start off with a personal recollection. I accompanied Mikhail Gorbachev on his visit to the United States of America almost seventeen years ago, and attended, as another adviser, Gorbachev’s meetings with George Bush Sr., and that gave me a rare chance to watch what historians of the future will surely be inclined to describe as the biggest breach of confidence and compare to the notoriously known Munich agreement between France and Britain, on the one hand, and Nazi Germany, on the other.

Mikhail Gorbachev and George Bush Sr. focused on the reunification of divided Germany. President Bush saw the reunification of Germany as a fundamental factor of continental stability and global detente.

He repeatedly assured Soviet leader Gorbachev that the reunification of Germany would never take the North Atlantic Alliance closer to the Soviet border.
I can still open my old notebook or play back an old tape to recall what he said: “The allied forces will not be inching closer to your border.”

...

The arrival of NATO forces at the border of Russia translates into more than a threat to the Russian Federation. Russia will find a way to meet this threat. The American super-hawks had better remember that Russia remains a powerful country with impressive stocks of nuclear missiles.

Russia concerned over NATO military buildup around its borders

23/ 01/ 2008

MOSCOW, January 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is concerned over NATO's expansion, which is aimed at building up its military potential around Russian borders rather than strengthening European security, the foreign minister said on Wednesday.

Russia has been unnerved by NATO's eastward expansion and recent U.S. plans to deploy missile defense elements in Poland and the Czech Republic.
"We are certain that the geographical expansion of NATO cannot be justified by security concerns," Sergei Lavrov told a news conference in Moscow.

I hope I'm not missing the point here, but it appears the concern is "and its allies". Isn't Iran an ally of Russia?

Russia and Central Asian Allies Conduct War Games in Response to US Threats

by Michel Chossudovsky

Global Research, August 24, 2006

Barely acknowledged by the Western media, military exercises organized by Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan under the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, (CSTO) were launched on the 24th of August. These war games, officially tagged as part of a counter terrorism program, are in direct response to US military threats in the region including the planned attacks against Iran.

......Observers say Russia is leaning more and more towards the Iranian view that countries from outside should be banned from having armed forces in the Caspian Sea

......While Iran is not a member of the CSTO, it has observer status in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), of which China is a member.

The SCO has a close relationship to the CSTO. The structure of military alliances is crucial. In case of an attack on Iran, Russia and its CSTO allies will not remain neutral. In April, Iran was invited to become a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

......Sofar no concrete timetable for Iran's accession to the SCO has been set.
