This is an idea that has gotten tossed around a lot but has never been truly attempted. I think it would be a very good, workable idea. Our aim would be to target a specific hour and try to raise one million dollars within that hour. A last minute attempt was made last time the morning of an event that managed to get tens of thousands of dollars. A more coordinated and early effort could achieve the goal of a million.
I think this idea's time has come because we are probably not going to see another November 5th-style fundraising day this time around. That is not bad since we are also getting more consistent funding that still gets fairly big single-day numbers occasionally and provides a huge war chest, but it doesn't grab attention the same way it did last time. A one-hour fundraising effort would achieve that.
The numbers he would not be daunting either. We can probably get 10,000 to contribute $25; 5,000 to contribute $50, 2,500 to contribute $100, and 1,250 to contribute $200 and that would land us at a million with 18,750 donors. Twice as many people donated that on October 19th. What is most complicated is picking an ideal hour. One time I looked at was November 26th 10 to 11 P.M. EST since that would be on a Saturday night when more people have time to spare and it would be placed a good distance from other planned events like Veteran's Day and the Tea Party event. Although taking place Thanksgiving weekend the Saturday night timeslot seems to be best suited for circumventing that issue since people typically will have done their shopping the day before and those who had to travel will probably be coming back around that time, plus being close to such a holiday makes it a little easier to remember. One advantage of the timeslot is that it could make for breaking news on the sunday morning news.
My biggest concern with this idea is the potential impact on the server of so many people donating in a such small period of time. Something like this coming off without any major problems would be a huge attention-grabber I think. Thoughts?
