It has advanced to a runoff for the Republican primary.

PEARLAND, Texas — State Rep. Randy Weber and attorney Felicia Harris will advance to a runoff for the Republican nomination to replace Ron Paul in Congressional District 14.

The Pearland residents were among 10 candidates on July 31. No candidate won 50 percent of the votes.

The winner of the runoff will face the Democratic nominee in the general election on Nov. 6. Rep. Ron Paul, a Republican who has represented the southeast Texas district since 1997, announced that he would not be seeking re-election to concentrate on a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, which he lost.

I don't understand how, of all districts, we couldn't get a Ron Paul Republican candidate to win in Ron Paul's OWN DISTRICT!

This is the district where everybody knows Ron and all Ron would have to do is tell his constituents to vote for his successor.

I don't get it...

I don't get it...

It was a crowded field. A lot of the people in Paul's district don't cast their vote for him just because of how he stands politically. Some people vote for him because they know his name. Other people vote for him because people they know, know his name. Some people vote for him because he has personally (or his staff) helped them. Some vote for him because of the pork he helped bring to the district. Some vote for him because they think he is an independent voice. And so on...

This is exactly my point.

In any other district in America, a Ron Paul endorsement and enthusiastic backing only means anything to us liberty-minded people.

In Ron Paul's district, people vote for him because they like him as a person even if they don't like or don't know his political views. That's why Ron Paul is able to win re-election to his district over and over again.

So if there were ever a district where Ron Paul could shift the race merely by lending his good name to a chosen candidate, it's in Texas CD14. Not to mention, he'd have an easy time asking for fundraising to help his chosen successor.

It strikes me as a wasted opportunity. Surely there must be SOMEONE who lives in CD14 who was willing to carry on Dr. Paul's torch.

What the heck happened??

Thomas Massie is replacing Ron Paul. Not physically since he lives in KY instead of Texas. But ideologically. That said, I don't know why more wasn't done to have an actual replacement for RP's district.

I appreciate George throwing his hat in the ring, but you aren't going to win a Congressional race without a lot of money and work. For the typical voter who doesn't attend campaign events, the only candidates on their radar are the ones who send them mail. Thus, you get the results seen in the OP.

There was some redistricting unfavorable to Ron Paul...even he may have had a hard time retaining his seat with the new district

Actually, this is nothing new. Ron Paul's district was dramatically changed with each new redistricting map (especially during the Tom Delay years). It is a credit to him that he was tenacious enough to keep in with almost entirely new voters each time they redistricted.

That is disgusting. I suppose these days people would ask our government to shield them from scary people like Jefferson and Adams to keep them from stirring up the colonies and quiet their mouths about their damn revolution. "What are they babbling about again? They're kind of kooky aren't they?"
