there's this comment at the Comedy Central site:

google trends took away the ability to compare based purely on google searches and incorporates the political articles in their results, use to you could see side by side, what people searched and what the people were writing. When they did that in my opinion it discredits this kind of "poll." If you want to be the google king why wouldn't you want it to be based on what people literally searched for, not articles that have a forum to distribute work, it seems silly. Of course Paul Ryan beats RP with the black out, but you can check it out for yourself, Paul Ryan still didn't beat RP in general, RP's 2008 google searches were higher than Paul Ryan in 2012.

Posted that yesterday. Per a comment it is only re related articles, so you had to HAVE an article first, and Ron's overall google searches were higher than Ryans -- in fact Ron's 2008 searches were higher than Ryan's in 2012. I didn't proof that myself....

Honestly, this is probably why Paul Ryan was at the top lol...

chalk this up to google's version of auto correct and the fact that the two share a name. You type in "paul" like you normally would when searching for a politician (by the last name) and first thing goog suggests is paul ryan.

now go ahead and just search for 'paul' and don't let goog correct you.

scroll to the bottom of the results page. guess who is there and who isn't?

i've been pointing out this little flaw of goog's to people for a while.

that comment to comedy central I quoted said it had to be googled in connection with an article. Ron had FAR fewer articles. That comment said Ron was more googled if you just look at searches. I didn't cross check, though.

CURRENTLY Ron Paul is above Paul Ryan, but both are low. They no longer show how the media coverage is in comparison, unfortunately: http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q="ron paul", "paul ryan"&date=today 1-m&cmpt=q
