Ron Paul top searched Republican candidate on Google

WASHINGTON - Ron Paul registers in the single digits in most polls, but he's the top searched Republican presidential candidate on Google, according to the Web site's trend history.

A large volume of hits for Paul in the last 30 days are coming from Iowa, as voters there prepare to caucus Jan. 3. The same holds true for most of his rivals, with the exception of Mitt Romney and John McCain.

A top source of Romney's searches in that span are coming from Utah, the seat of his Mormon faith. McCain's hits are coming from New Hampshire, where he won the Republican presidential primary in 2000.

People sought more information about the contenders around news events.

Fred Thompson saw a spike in searches in early September, about the time the actor-politician announced his bid for the White House. He's now lower than he was in April. Romney saw an increase in the days surrounding his Dec. 6 speech on his faith.

Mike Huckabee has been surging in the polls and seeing an increase in the number of people searching for his name. While he's a far second behind Paul, he's just ahead of Romney.

McCain and Giuliani aren't searched as frequently, the site's search pattern shows.

Wow guys, those TV Ads/Informericals/Canvassing must be helping because Iowa has gone from almost no search volume to almost the most. Beating out many bigger states, you guys are doing a great job.

Remeber some 60%+ of Voters still haven't even made an opinion about Paul yet.

If you go to www.google.com/trends and type in "ron paul" and "republican" you will notice that around Nov 5 there was an increase in searches for Ron Paul and republican at the same time. I'm being optimistic and thinking that a lot of people decided to register as republicans based on Ron Paul's fundraising success on Nov 5th during the first money bomb.

I think the data is skewed a little bit here because Ron Paul does not have a "googleable" last name like the other candidates. You must compare "Ron Paul" searches to both "huckabee" and "mike huckabee" added together to get a better comparison.

It's very clear that the "paul" trend runs fairly parallel with "ron paul".
