Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul brought his limited-government campaign to UC San Diego Friday night, assailing federal officials for their handling of a 23-year-old engineering student accidentally left in a holding cell without food or water for five days last month.

"If we need laws to restrain individuals in any way possible they should be state laws, it shouldn't be the federal government and it shouldn't be the DEA," said Rep. Paul, R-Texas, also taking aim at the Federal Reserve and Transportation Security Administration.

"We know about the case of Daniel, one of the students here, of being arrested and thrown in a prison and forgotten — for five days — ending up in an intensive-care unit," Paul said to loud boos. "And then it's done in the name of being a compassionate conservative. That's not compassion at all."

Daniel Chong filed a $20 million claim Wednesday that referred to his ordeal as torture, including having to drink his own urine to survive and eating his broken glasses during hallucinations from severe dehydration.

there's that incorrect 'hasn't won a primary or a caucus'.... sorry, Louisiana, Virgin Islands, you don't matter....

pretty sure when this story broke daniel said he ate a bag of "white powder" he found in the cell, and he thought it was meth. im thinking that may be why he hallucinated.

Regardless, you can't put someone in a cage and go away for five days. And he hadn't even been CHARGED, apparently.

This is punishment without trial or charge. It doesn't matter even if he did something, this is grossly illegal.

Well, frankly, it doesn't matter what he ate. Hallucinations happen from severe dehydration. He may not even know for certain. The ordeal is sufficient for a colorable 1983 claim without that detail.

Are you joking or what? Are you saying the DEA planted some drugs in his cell? Would that make it any better? That would make his case even stronger!! "Uh, besides leaving me neglected without food or water for 5 days, they did provide some drugs." I hope your joking.
But, in reality, being without water and having to drink you own pee will make you hallucicate.
