Ron Paul Now Has the Poker World Talking

As Gambling911.com disclosed on Wednesday, online bookies were working feverishly trying to get their customers on the Ron Paul bandwagon. The Texas Congressman who is running as a 2008 US Presidential candidate has raised close to $20 million this quarter alone and - best of all for the online gambling industry, including online poker - Ron Paul is one of the few candidates who is pro Internet gambling.

A thread first begun in May on the popular poker forum Two Plus Two has developed into an impressive 198 page behemoth with no signs of closing down any time soon.

One of the more intriguing topics of discussion: Why polls may not reflect what appears to be reality. Wrote one poster, who gave us the permission to use his real name - Mike Van de Water:

"I went to the Portland Tea Party last weekend (A few pages back), and got to conversation with about 15 people total. A grand total of ONE of them had EVER voted Republican before. The people who I talk to at work (Own my own buisness and have Ron Paul stuff up and on the counter) who are going to vote for him also either haven't voted or voted Dem in the past.

"This is one of many reasons that the polls don't convey his support, and why the Old Media is so far behind the times. They'll figure it out after Iowa/NH, when the losers drop out. They'll have no choice when he's one of the last 3 or 4 candidates in the field."

Don't discount the poker world. Millions play, millions have been adversely affected by recent legislation banning the activity and millions are likely to start spreading the message Paul supporters have been preaching all along.

This is very true, I heard about Ron Paul on pocketfives.com.

Well, even though the poker world knows about Ron Paul, they should know even more. Perhaps some attention should be focused to as many poker affiliates that can be found.

Who was that guy that had to move overseas to restart his massive poker site because of the ban?

6 Million votes in America wins the nomination.

If just the gambling crowd all votes then we win.

This is good new but I often wonder why a group like this takes so long to jump on the only wagon headed to thier town.

Oh well, better late than never. :)

Yes, the online gambling world is very upset at the ban. I, for one was a casual player only and felt violated by this legislation. I would have to say though that there is a healthy amount of political banter in many poker site forums and many wouldn't vote for Paul simply because they're entrenched in their beliefs. The one's I know are pure bloodthirsty neocons, but I put up a pro Ron Paul argument that makes them eat humble pie. They usually crawl back into their shells until I'm gone...

Regardless, this is good news. Very good news.

I would also remind everyone here that Vegas/Bookies had the Teaparty07 totals guess-imates very close. I think they were predicting $6mil.

I was reading an article on the state of poker in the Economist:

http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10281315

They mention the Poker Player's Alliance, working to overturn the ban, boasted a group of 800,000+ members, which I had not heard before. I checked it out and it's legit. They are highly organized and led by a motivated Harvard Law professor. Clearly, Paul is a huge ally in their cause.

The poker players are marching in step and now have a motivation to get out and vote. That should be good news for this campaign, no doubt.

so this group of 800,000 + supports Paul? Or do we need to bring him to their attention?

Aye, online futures markets are -- from what I've seen -- the most accurate predictors of just about everything. Intrade and the IEM predict the Presidential elections with deadly accuracy.

I've been following the 2+2 forums since the very beginning. Mostly, I lurk, but I also post from time. Since the provision concerning money transfers over the Internet was inserted into the Safe Harbors Act I've been spending less time there, and after getting 5 figures frozen by the Dept. of Justice I stopped playing. Still I stop by from time to time and that's where I heard about Ron Paul 9 or 10 months ago. I have maxed out my donation to the campaign and I've since given a little to the blimp.

That all said, do not go and spam the poker forums. All the die hard internet poker players heard about Ron Paul months ago. Anyone inclined to do like me, already has. Those who aren't interested are sick of hearing about it. Trust me, there are plenty of active posters with good reputations on all of those boards who are keeping Ron Paul's candidacy an active subject of conversation. Poker internet forums are a harvested field.

But a very good location to spot potential supporters is live action. You will find a lot more casual players there who might not have heard about Ron Paul or know much about internet gambling regulation beyond the haziest outlines. But they're interested. Poker players sympathize with libertarian positions at a much higher rate than the general population. Also, many players go in order to socialize. If you can bring up Ron Paul in conversation it's likely that another one or two will say something that at least suggests they take him as a serious candidate. That kind of social proof is strong.

Definitely worth keeping in mind if you'll be taking a seat at a game in the next few weeks.

That all sounds like sound advice to me.

The internet community does not need any pushing. If I was in America I'd be making the biggest sign possible and looking for a good freeway spot.

Yeah, RP awareness is up...RP and Kucinich were the only candidates awarded with As, most were either ? or F.

Kojack's advice is spot on. Politically motivated posting in the poker forums isn't wise unless you have some established cred. RP is well spoken for.
