Cover up? Incompetence? Lax security? That is what you hear from the mainstream media. What did those talking points say and when did they say it? Ron Paul, the GOP libertarian presidential candidate, has drilled down to the core issue of Benghazi. The US foreign policy.
Right now, the GOP smells blood in the water to go after the administration on Benghazi on why they didn’t call it an act of terror immediately and why there wasn’t sufficient security on the late Ambassador. Democrats have said the controversy is a paper tiger and have gone so far as to blame the GOP for making cuts to State Department security.
Paul, in his new letter, is quick to place blame squarely on both parties. Both want to shift focus away from the fact that interventionist US policy caused what happened. The same militants tat killed the US ambassador were trained and armed by the US in its quest to overthrow the Libyan government.
Eastern Libya around the Benghazi area was well known to send foreign fighters in Iraq at the height of that war. Those radicalized elements then came home and fought to overthrow the Libyan regime. Previously secured weapons were now in what amounts to a fire sale. Weapons have even made their way into Mali which has incurred another French and US intervention.
Ron Paul goes forward and brings up the arming of Syrian rebels as yet another intervention in which unintended consequences are almost assured. The most heavily armed and trained rebels in Syria are Islamists who want to turn Syria into a Islamic republic complete with Sharia law.
