Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul trashed FEMA today, just hours before Hurricane Irene is scheduled to make landfall in the U.S. Approximately 65 million people are in the storm's projected path.

While giving a speech in Gilford, New Hampshire, the die-hard libertarian said no national response to Hurricane Irene is needed. "A state can decide," Paul said. "We don't need somebody in Washington."

FEMA is incompetent, much like rest of government bureacracy, look no further back than to Katrina.

I find it funny that FEMA was absolutely trashed back when Katrina happened but now all of a sudden they're the saviors of America...

Might cause him some serious trouble because people just kind of assume that the way things are is the way they are supposed to be. Unless that thing has directly inconvenienced them. I agree with him, but I don't think it will be taken well.

Probably true, many people worship the government and believe all good things come from it and without it we'd all just be back in the stone ages.

I think the state governments have been demonized. People most likely think that if something like Katrina happened, and there was no FEMA, then the other states would just watch and stare.

I'm not too concerned about this, an honest look at FEMA response supports his position all the way. I had a brush with FEMA after hurricane IKE. They showed up a little over two weeks late with water and MREs. At this point, power, water, and fuel availability had mostly been restored. If people had been counting on FEMA for survival, they would be dead.

The thing with FEMA is that their public side - disaster response is 5% of what they do.

The other 95% is C.O.G. - Continuity of Government. These are the people with all the bunkers for the President, members of Congress and other VIP's.

Ron just needs to mention Katrina every time. Even people who love the ideal of it can admit it's severally broken, and we might as well scrap the whole thing and start over.

Instead of saying FEMA is not necessary, he should have said that *input solution* is a much better solution. He's saying the same thing only with less negative baggage associated with it.

Salon will NEVER like anything about Ron Paul. May as well expect the Daily Kos to endorse him. I wouldn't take Salon's sneering as determinative.
