Ron Paul endorses Lonegan's congressional bid

By Matthew Arco | May 1st, 2014 - 9:35am

Former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) endorsed Lonegan’s CD 3 bid Thursday, saying in a statement that the former Bogota mayor is “exactly what we need in Washington.”

“Steve Lonegan will be a fantastic congressman for the third district of New Jersey,” Paul said. “His commitment to smaller government and more personal liberties is exactly what we need in Washington.”

Paul endorsed Lonegan’s 2009 gubernatorial bid against then former U.S. Attorney Chris Christie. Paul’s son, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky) stumped for Lonegan in New Jersey last year during the former mayor’s U.S. Senate bid against Cory Booker.

Lonegan said in a statement announcing the endorsement that he’s honored to receive the nod from the former libertarian congressman.

“His leadership in the fight for smaller government, less spending and personal liberty is exemplary,” Lonegan said. “I look forward to bringing the principles we share to Congress next year.”

Lonegan is competing against former Randolph Mayor Tom MacArthur in the Republican primary for the opportunity to succeed outgoing U.S. Rep. Jon Runyan (R-3) in Washington.

This primary has gotten REALLY dirty and MacArthur is getting the establishment support. I get smear flyers from both of them weekly.

Do you have a bead on how Lonegan is doing in the primary?
I don't have a clue; BUT MacArthur has a crapton of money.
As of April filing:
Candidate, Total Contributions, Cash On Hand
MacArthur: $2,001,075.00, $1,749,270.28
Lonegan: $402,312.77, $172,054.45

Plus MacArthur has the county GOP's phone banking for him.
The last poll I could find was in march: with lonegan winning 41%to MacArthur at 2%
But that was before the money, smear campaign and phone banking.
It will be close.

Looks like a self funder from the fec reports. I thought you said Lonegan had establishment support too?

I dont' think I would have said Lonegan had establishment support. I'd surprised if he ever did, he's a bombthrower, they don't like him. He'd be a great congressman though, he has my votes.

Lonegan said that MacArthur won the chamber’s support by agreeing to back the “comprehensive immigration reform” plan, which would increase levels of immigration. “You have to answer ‘yes’ to that question to get that endorsement,” Lonegan said.

MacArthur admitted that he supports the legal equivalent of amnesty for the 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. “I’ve said the same thing to anyone who has asked me and that is I oppose amnesty,” MacArthur said. “I believe we need to send illegal immigrants that have committed a crime home to their country of origin.”
