Louisiana Convention Results: Ron Paul Delegates Arrested as They Command Majority
by Hamdan Azhar (PolicyMic)

“I’m handicapped! I need a doctor!” “Sir, this is the chairman!” The Louisiana State Republican Convention descended into chaos this morning, with several delegates being arrested and the convention chairman being thrown to the ground by police. Sources report that state party officials panicked when it became clear that Ron Paul delegates commanded a decisive majority of the delegates on the floor – at least 111 of 180 (62%).

The convention began peacefully with a prayer and invocation. Roger Villere, Chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party, then attempted to recognize the former Chair of the Convention’s Rules Committee who had been ousted from his position last night. When Alex Helwig, the newly elected Rules Committee chair, rose to address the delegation, Mr. Villere ordered him removed from the floor. Video footage shows Shreveport police dragging Mr. Helwig out of the room despite his protests that he was a duly elected delegate.

At this point, a motion was made to elect a new convention chairman. Henry Herford, Jr., was elected by an overwhelming majority. Nevertheless, Mr. Villere – who had appointed himself the convention chairman – refused to relinquish control of the gathering. As the delegates began turning their chairs around, Mr. Herford, the newly elected chairman, rose to call the convention to order. Sources report that, in an act of desperation, Mr. Villere and state party officials then ordered police to attack Mr. Herford.

(Reuters) - Police said a Ron Paul supporter was arrested and complained of injury after refusing to leave the Louisiana Republican State Convention on Saturday, a boisterous event where backers of the Texas congressman argued for a greater voice.

The fracas follows Paul's decision last month to suspend active campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination, which Mitt Romney clinched on Tuesday with a resounding victory in the Texas primary.

Even so, Paul's supporters had been expected to push for a greater voice at the Louisiana Republican State Convention in Shreveport, where the party met to decide on delegates to the national convention in August, potentially exposing rifts in the party.

Rick Santorum won the Louisiana Republican presidential primary in March, and Paul finished fourth. But the state has a bifurcated primary and caucus system, and supporters of Paul performed strongly in caucuses held in April.

At the convention on Saturday, Paul supporter Henry Herford, 56, was asked to leave the convention by a representative of the executive board that organized the event, said Shreveport police spokesman Sergeant Bill Goodin.

When Herford refused the request to exit, off-duty Shreveport police officers who were providing security at the event tried to escort him out and he resisted, Goodin said. He was eventually taken away and charged with the misdemeanor crime of entering and remaining after being forbidden, Goodin said.

Herford, who was released after he received a court summons, complained of an injury and was taken to a hospital.

Ron Paul national campaign manager John Tate said in a statement that Herford was "attacked" by security officials.

"Mr. Herford has a prosthetic hip and according to a doctor at the scene it appears as though the prosthetic was dislocated and may require replacement," Tate said.

Louisiana Republican officials had sought to "use illegally adopted rules to deny Ron Paul supporters an opportunity to attend the Republican National Convention" in Tampa, Florida, in August, Tate said.

Representatives from the Republican Party of Louisiana could not be reached by phone or e-mail on Saturday.

From now on the state RNC committee chairman and chairwoman should meet with the event authorities and local police to go over the state convention rules with respect to who is in charge and when.

I suspect they did. Mind you, it was THEIR version of who was in charge....

Officers were 'off duty'? Oh boy, sue them individually as well as the department since they are plainly visible on tape as wearing the uniform. The person giving the order to security is also liable but since these men are considered 'experts' then their actions are still held above what citizen standards are.
One officer during the Helwig tape offered the excuse that he thought that the person was under arrest. Dude, did you just say that under arrest means it was ok to cause physical injury? You just opened a world of hurt upon you and your department legally.
Also, it does not matter to the local police department about 'the rules' or who is in charge. The police department itself can only act on currently laws being broken which upsets at a convention are not.

Well you are right. Thank you.

The former Chair & Officers need to be PERSONALLY liable for this. Sue them for every penny they're worth. Corruption deserves to be penniless.

I credit you guys in LA for not getting violent. My blood would have been boiling. I do ask, at what point do we say enough is enough?

If they were off duty than they are in a lot of trouble. In the video that was posted one of them is asking the one that was taping the event to hand his phone as evidence and to give him his drivers licence because he had the power to ask for them.

That's quite a bit different than the policymic story.

I like how reuters just doesn't consider it worth mentioning that the guy was the duly elected chairman of the event.

I'm telling you, at the RNC we will be arrested or never even allowed in. They will never allow us to do what we have every right to do...not vote on the first ballot or vote for Paul.

And if that happens, then we must destroy the Republican Party. Burn it (figuratively) to the ground and replace it.

It was never "anybody but Obama", it was always "anybody but Paul".

I seriously hope no one turned anything over to the cops.
