Ron Paul: Common Core used to bribe states into following educational mandates

On May 27, former Congressman Ron Paul dedicated time in his weekly 'fireside chat' blog to discuss the destructive methods used in education today by the Federal government. In a program known as Common Core, Paul stated that the Education Department under President Obama is using Federal money as a bribe to the states to instruct children what to learn, not with tried and true reading methodologies, but instead with a series of articles that support programs adopted in the administration for the changing of America.

Common Core is a new curriculum developed by a panel of so-called education experts. The administration is trying to turn Common Core into a national curriculum by offering states increased federal education funding if they impose Common Core’s curriculum on their public schools. This is yet another example of the government using money stolen from the people to bribe states into obeying federal dictates.

Critics of Common Core say it “dumbs down” education by replacing traditional English literature with “informational texts”. So students will read such inspiring materials as studies by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, the EPA’s “Recommended Levels of Insulation,” and “Invasive Plant Inventory” by California’s Invasive Plant Council. It is doubtful that reading federal reports will teach students the habits of critical thinking and skepticism of government that the Founders considered essential to maintaining a free republic.

Education is the cornerstone of every nation, and the key to future progress for people. During the Dark Ages, when over 95% of the population was illiterate following the fall of the Roman Empire, Emperor Charlemagne made it a vital platform to build schools and universities, open to children of all social and economic levels. This foundation gave rise to the greatest time of progress and invention a few centuries later, and brought the Western world into the forefront of empire and civilization.

Beginning in the 20th century however, control over education and learning became the cornerstone for dictatorial regimes such as the Soviet Union, and even Nazi Germany. Programmed education of the young to accept the government, economic, and social structures, goes back to the writings of Karl Marx in the Communist Manifesto, and even Adolph Hitler in Mein Kampf.
