While its neither illegal or unethical, it certainly misleads a lot of people, especially when there is a crowd. It is on the borderline of false advertising when there is a crowd doing it though.

I'm mixed on this. I doubt it is illegal to pay someone to hold a sign...it'd probably be construed as advertising a "brand". That being said, a store owner advertising Coke products doesn't create the illusion of "Coke supporters", just lets one know that they serve Coke. The campaign itself paying people to do this does create an illusion of support that is not actually there if they have to pay people, which IMHO is the same as false advertisement...

Either way, this is a small part of our problems.

Pepsi, wont take you to war - Mitt Romney will. While the concept may be the same, one is artificial support, to boost public perception, and sway the entire direction of the country, the other is artificial support to get people to drink something, the advertisers.. may not be too fond of themselves personally.
