Romney Revolt at Liberty University

ROMNEY REVOLT AT LIBERTY UNIVERSITY
Much to their chagrin, the GOP establishment is getting Romney pushback everywhere–this time at Liberty University. Writes Ron Paul Campaign Senior Adviser Doug Wead:

Keep your Romney, give us Ron Paul!

The John McCain, eh sorry, the Mitt Romney campaign replayed a scene from past failed Republican candidates yesterday.* They announced in the morning that Governor Romney would be the commencement speaker at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.* The school founded, by Jerry Falwell, is touted as the largest Christian University in the world. And in the afternoon they announced that openly gay, Richard Grenell, would be Romney’s new national security and foreign policy spokesman.

Students at Liberty were in an uproar.* Not over Grenell, but over the University choosing Romney instead of their beloved Ron Paul.* The firestorm began on the University’s own website, where the thread hit 700 comments in a couple of hours.* The discussion was promptly censored and then shut down proving that the University is not very aptly named.* But the discussion moved onto Facebook where it continues to spread.

Ron Paul has a large support base on campuses in general, all campuses, Christian or otherwise. **According to Braedon Wilkerson, Ron Paul district coordinator, he carried the city of Lynchburg by a 51-49% margin and the newly created Liberty University precinct 60-40%.* “The campus and the city belong to Ron Paul.”

Good.

If this "university" wants to be consistent, it should have no part in allying itself with a moderate Mormon. The university is so extreme it won't allow a Democrat club on campus because it goes against the school's principles, but they'll whore themselves out for a Mormon politician because it helps them worm their way into the next administration? They need to pay for this mistake, as far as I'm concerned.

Whatever credibility they had (I never thought they had any; it's a joke of a school) is completely gone. They're truly wolves in sheep's clothing. They're pushing a bad agenda on their student body. The heads of Liberty University worship the State, not God. What a sorry excuse for a Baptist evangelical university. I spit on them.

mod: why pick a fight when we have just been given new ammunition to fight the battle we are in?

I like my Tweet: Sure, U can make Mitt Romney the nominee, but U can't make me VOTE for him. :)

Liberty University has revealed itself to be an institution bought and paid for by the Republican establishment. It should lose its accreditation and its students should riot. What a disgusting fucking school. I'm nauseated. It literally forces its students to worship the GOP establishment. They're so extreme they won't even allow Democrats to go to their school. I don't care how you feel about "liberals," but that's just hilarious considering they've now invited two Mormon cultists into their "hallowed" halls in order to sell their souls to the pimps and hustlers in the GOP, who're anything but true Christians.

I would NOT turn this positive story into a negative.

We are trying to convince other conservatives to rally behind Ron, and attacking them is NOT the way to do that imho. Save that particular battle for another day, I would say. Whatever reality is, and I have no idea, that is not the image, obviously. We have something handed to us, and I think we should use it. Meanwhile Romney and Santa folks have banded in MO to seat the Jefferson cty dels that HAD been called voter suppression by Romney until they (being party folks for the state) came around behind Romney. We want conservatives behind Ron.

I can't stand the hypocrisy of an institution that calls itself "Liberty" and pretends to enforce a Baptist worldview selling itself out for a Mormon moderate. The institution itself is corrupt. It's always supported NEOCONSERVATIVE platforms and has always been used against people like us. It's an evil school and it deserves no respect. They don't respect free thought, which is evident by their ban of a Campus Democrats club, which shows you how afraid they are of dissenting thought. The school is a factory for churning out brainless establishment robots, nothing more, nothing less. Its Christianity is ancillary to its desire for enforcing an authoritarian worldview on all of us.

You seem to be saying that they shouldn't be supporting a Mormon. Is that your position? Because I've got to tell you, you sound pretty intolerant to be a Ron Paul supporter.

You say the word "cult" as if its a bad thing. To quote a great man, "You keep saying that word. I don't think it means what you think it means." I give you the dictionary's definition:
"cult
   [kuhlt]
noun
1.a particular system of religious worship, especially with reference to its rites and ceremonies.
2.an instance of great veneration of a person, ideal, or thing, especially as manifested by a body of admirers: the physical fitness cult.
3.the object of such devotion.
4.a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.
5.Sociology . a group having a sacred ideology and a set of rites centering around their sacred symbols. "

So, in conclusion, all religions are cults. All of them. Even your narrow minded, self-righteous, warped form of Christianity.

No, I just think Liberty University is a hideous institution that teaches intolerance against everyone other than Evangelicals, but finds itself whoring itself out for the GOP whenever it can. They teach Mormonism is a cult, yet the moment it's convenient they invite someone they teach their student body is destined to Hell so they can advance whatever strange/twisted form of Christianity they believe somehow is a part of the Neoconservative Republican platform. The university has absolutely no integrity--never has, never will, never can--because all its leadership cares about is shameless political prostitution.

Personally, I'm an atheist. I have been for years. My point, as I described above, is that the school can't have it both ways and try to pretend Mitt's religion is irrelevant. The Twitter thing was a product of my anger. I haven't touched the issue aside from my posts on here and a comment or two on a news story. I just feel bad for the people who are conned into getting an education at this horrible, hypocritical school because its only purpose is to indoctrinate. The only "acceptable" political position on that campus is the Neoconservative/GOP establishment party line. They've BANNED students from having clubs/organizations that don't adhere to that.

Has this speech happened yet? I hope Obomney gets booed off stage.

He won't be. The school is pretty much its own private surveillance state. They'd probably expunge your student record and expel you post-graduation after carefully they carefully view tapes of your participation in any kind of protest. It's a sick, sick school.

If you can define all religions as being 'cults' you have a bad definition for the term 'cult'.

That being said nearly all newer religions are defined as cults. I don't think that is fair. I would define a religious cult as any religion that purposely negatively affects the participant while asking for his loyalty/money/etc.

What is your basis for believing that Liberty University would expel a student for engaging in protest or specifically for booing Romney? I am only a distance learning student at Liberty University (and a Ron Paul supporter since before '08), but my experience with other students and with professors has not been consistent with the picture you paint. I wrote a paper where I talked about stereotyping of muslims and such and my professor gave me plenty of praise -- definitely not indicating he is in lock-step with the neocon agenda! I wrote a letter to the President of Liberty expressing my displeasure at Romney being named commencement speaker, but come on folks, let's keep this in perspective. Liberty has had agnostic and Catholic and Jewish commencement speakers as well - its not like they've only had Baptists and all of a sudden they are selling out by having Romney. You can't blast Liberty U for being intolerant and then complain that they are having a commencement speaker from a religion/worldview that is inconsistent with their own....
I pointed out to Liberty U that my issue with Romney as the commencement speaker is that NOT that he is a Mormon or that he doesn't hold the same views as me, but rather that he is generally inconsistent and intellectually inconsistent/dishonest, which I do not find consistent with the critical thinking that IS taught at Liberty based on my experience.

On that note, I am in the midst of a Theology course there and previously took their Bible and Apologetics courses and there was no censorship of opposing views or doubting or criticism on the course discussion board - free and open discourse and critical, evidence-based thinking was encouraged. Let's win people over by continuing to engage them with truth, not by blasting people for being less liberty-minded than we think we are.

Liberty University in Lynchbyrg, Va., has revoked its recognition of the campus Democratic Party club because, according to a university official, the club's "parent organization stands against the moral principles held by Liberty."

In a May 15 e-mail to the student group, Liberty Vice President for Student Affairs Mark Hine said the club must end its affiliation with University. The group can no longer use Liberty's name, logo, or seal for its publications, Web sites, Facebook page, Twitter account or anything else.

"The Democratic Party platform is contrary to the mission of LU and to Christian doctrine (supports abortion, federal funding of abortion, advocates repeal of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, promotes the 'LGBT' agenda, Hate Crimes, which include sexual orientation and gender identity, socialism, etc)," Hine wrote in the e-mail to the LU College Democrats.

Liberty, which was founded by the late Christian evangelist Rev. Jerry Falwell, has had a College Republicans club for years. The College Democrats formed late last year and supported Barack Obama in the presidential election.

The university's action has become a rallying point for Democrats. The College Democrats of America Alumni Association is raising money online to show administrators at Liberty "that attacking our freedom of expression will only strengthen College Democrats nationwide."

All three Democratic candidates in the Virginia gubernatorial race have spoken out on the school's decision, according to the Lynchburg News and Advance. Democratic National Committee chairman and Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, who is Catholic, also put out a statement.

"I urge the leadership of Liberty University to reverse this attack on the liberty of its students and allow the College Democrats to have the same rights on campus as their counterparts, the College Republicans," he said.

Oh yeah, that sounds really Liberty Minded. Attend the actual university and see how well you can adhere to the "Liberty Way." That aside, I don't know why anyone would want a college degree from a university that teaches you the Earth is six thousand years old, but I'm all for personal choice.
