Being a fan of Rush's music prior to the 1990s, I can tell you up front that Neil Peart is crapping on Rand Paul precisely because he is a Christian, the nonsense about health care and minorities is just a convenient way of excusing it. All you have to do is read the lyrics (all written by Peart, Geddy Lee just sings them) of most of their material following the late 1980s (and even some of the stuff going back to the 70s) and you'll hear a bunch of anti-theist drivel, it's been particularly obnoxious on the past couple of albums, which were quite terrible musically I might add.
Peart used to be a big fan of Ayn Rand, and I think Murray Rothbard pretty well nailed it when describing how cult-like most of Rand's original followers were back in the 1960s and 70s. People who belong to cults tend to be extremely unstable ideologically and will generally float anywhere the winds blow them. The mistake people make when approaching musicians like Peart is assuming that they have any idea of what they are talking about. Let's face it, the guy is a brilliant drummer, and the amount of practice it takes to get that good usually leaves one with very little time to actually know what they are talking about on an unrelated topic.
