What do you expect? He's the RNC Chair. Of all the party leadership, he has to compromise the most for the sake of coalition building. Social conservatives, neocons, libertarians, paleocons; as a figurehead he has to say things that keep these groups as amicable to each other as possible. Think Atlas Shrugged. "How DARE you oppose the Civil Rights Act?" People don't care about what's in the bill. The title clearly states that the bill is for civil rights. Must be good. Are you against civil rights? So, you're telling me you're against the financial reform bill. Why are you anti-reform?
I seriously doubt that having to discuss the Civil Rights Act was something party leadership expected to have to do. It's a non-issue. The GOP's party line has become "rookie mistake", no big deal. The Dems overplayed their hand on this one, and Rand got a bunch of media coverage. Conway's no spring chicken; he's gonna get drug through the mud too, but won't have any principled positions to stand on. Patience...
