Brian Wilson, visionary creative spirit for the Beach Boys, dies aged 82

Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys musician, songwriter and producer who created some of history’s most purely beautiful pop music, has died aged 82.

In a post shared on Instagram on Wednesday, Wilson’s family wrote: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”

As the leading creative force in the Beach Boys, Wilson crafted a variously carefree and melancholy sound that came to define the uncertain utopianism of mid-century California. Using ambitious studio techniques to give the band’s music a thrilling grandeur, his songs about surfing, driving, girls and the pep of youth modulated to more reflective and often psychedelic material, resulting in one of the most highly regarded catalogues of American song. The Beach Boys’ 1966 album Pet Sounds – written and produced almost entirely by Wilson – is seen not only as the group’s masterpiece, but for many is the greatest album of all time.

One of the very first surf hits was written by Brian Wilson, but he gave the song to music duo Jan and Dean. It pretty much sounded like The Beach Boys.

I've got a few good Beach Boy stories, but here's one... When I started getting pretty good on guitar, I had an older coworker tell me that rock music was so basic and only had 3 chords. I showed him this:

[VERSE 1]
C/G Am
I may not always l love you,
Em Em7 A
But long as there are stars above you,
D/A Bbdim7
You’ll never need to doubt it,
D/A Abm7b5
I'll make you so sure about it.
[REFRAIN 1]
G D/F# Em7 D
God only knows what I'd be without you.
[VERSE 2]
C/G Am
If you should ever leave me
Em Em7 A
Though life would still go on believe me,
D/A Bbdim7
The world could show nothing to me,
D/A Abm7b5
So what good would living do me.
[REFRAIN 2]
G D/F# Em7 D
God only knows what I'd be without you.
[INSTRUMENTAL l] (Keyboard, Bass & drums, then Scat vocals over)
|F Dm6 Am Am7 D7|
(Aah-aah-aah, Doo-doo-doo)
[dual-tracked]
|G/D Ebdim G/D C#m7b5|
(Bah-buppa-bah, Bah-buppa-bah)
[REFRAIN 3]
C/G G/B Am7
God only knows what I'd be with-out you.
[VERSE 3]
C/G Am
If you should ever leave me,
Em Em7 A
Though life would still go on believe me,
D/A Bbdim7
The world could show nothing to me,
D/A Abm7b5
So what good would living do me.
[REFRAIN 4] (Repeat x6)
G D/F# Em7 D
God only knows what I'd be without you-oo,
G D/F# Em7 D
God only knows what I'd be without you, (God only knows…)
[CODA] (Fade)
G D/F# Em7 D
God only knows what I'd be without you.

Incredible composer. RIP.

I last saw em at Starligte outdoor ampiteatre in Indy, probably summer of 1980 , it was fantastic!

Last time I saw them was in the early 90s. It was at King's Dominion amusement park in Virginia.

Earlier in the day, my buddy and I found some cute girls in line for one of the rides. We ended up going out to their car and drinking their booze and smoking some dope. Then, we went back in for some rides. Big mistake. After getting off a roller coaster, my head was spinning, but it was spinning vertically! (never did that before or since). We realized we were late for the concert, so we got off the ride and ditched the girls to meet up with the rest of our group. We ran to the concert and found them. I watched a few songs trying to maintain, but then Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) came out and started playing drums. I spent most of the rest of the show puking into a planter at the back of the venue. Good times!
