Folks, I wanted to update this board with recent progress in my campaign.

I have won my primary on February 12th and now go on to face my four term incumbent Democrat.

I have formed my committee and have a dedicated team of professionals stepping up as campaign manager and treasurer. I will start appearances around the district a various political clubs this month. I could use some help getting over the initial fund raising hump. I would like to report ten thousand in my coffers by the end of the month. http://www.richardmatthews.org/donate/

I have a shot against the Democrat incumbent in this moderate district. Maryland's current resentment against taxes and my opponents vote history on Iraq and the reauthorization of the patriot act make him vulnerable to a Liberty Candidate such as myself.

Biography

Richard Pryce Matthews is the Republican candidate for the United States House of Representatives for Maryland's second congressional district. He is a refreshing Republican voice for traditional conservatives, advocating a strict adherence to our Constitution, small government, a non-interventionist foreign policy, and free markets.
Matthews was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 9, 1980. Son of Emma C. Matthews and the late Edward R. Matthews, Richard's childhood was spent mostly in Arnold, Maryland. Two years of early childhood were spent in Ankara, Turkey, where younger brother Stuart was born and their father worked for the United States Government on a diplomatic assignment. During summertime stays with his grandparents, Matthews fondly remembers being aroused in the morning by his retired Naval Officer grandfather's rendition of "You're A Grand Old Flag" which was his command to hoist the U.S. Flag first thing in the morning. Matthews was exposed to government service throughout his childhood by his family's interest in politics and involvement in the Navy, the National Security Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency. A grateful nation has honored both his late father and grandfather with burials at Arlington National Cemetery.
Mr. Matthews currently works as a pre-sales and deployment engineer for an encryption/messaging company. He has grown experienced working in the information technology community for over ten years. Matthews has often worked directly with high-level political, military and business leaders, planning for the technological needs of their organizations. He brings this extensive knowledge of technology with him to his political career, a rare perspective among politicians.
Recently, Matthews has volunteered with the presidential campaign of Congressman Ron Paul. He has served as the Organizer of the Anne Arundel County Ron Paul Meetup, which has organized citizens throughout central Maryland, to support Dr. Paul through fund raising and grassroots work on the streets.
Mr. Matthews decided to challenge Democratic incumbent Dutch Ruppersberger for his congressional seat when it became clear that no challenger had stepped forward supporting a liberty platform. Matthews knew that the voters deserved the option for change in Washington rather than the positions of a career politician that has continually voted in favor of the Iraq War as well as curtailing of our civil liberties.
Matthews will soon be a father with his wife Wendy Matthews, who works as a critical care nurse. They live in Orchard Beach, Anne Arundel County, Maryland with their dog Jasmine. His mother, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law live in Annapolis Maryland while his younger brother lives in San Francisco California.

"How Would Matthews Vote?" is a very clever idea.

How are you doing? How are you reaching out to regular Republicans in the district?

Slaughter him on Iraq and the Patriot Act, and try not to be too radical on the economy if you're in the Fed. Calling for the abolishment of the Department of Education tends to scare off middle-class voters.

A better way to say abolishing the Dept of Edu would be

I belief in the redistribution of power in the American School system(ie take it from the fed govt and give it back to the states)

A major plank of the Richard Matthews campaign is tax reform. Not only do we Americans pay too much, but the primary method of taxation is oppressive to our dignity and provides excessive policy authority to our Federal Government. Tax simplification is a major thrust of this campaign and should be a focus of the Republican Party.

Bureaucratic overhaul never being a pretty sight, and always taking longer than desired, Matthews will propose a quicker partial remedy on our way to full tax reform. Upon election Richard Matthews will introduce and/or sponsor a bill in congress to exempt all military retirement pay from Federal Income tax. If any class deserves tax simplification and relief first it is our Veterans.

This will have a multitude of positive effects:

# Retirees with no other income will not need to file a tax return. All of their income will go to them, in the free and clear of the Federal Tax collector. Accountants and paper work are no more, retirement is simple and carefree as it should be.
# Many Forty and Fifty-somethings with families working a post-military-career will pay dramatically less taxes. For example if the retiree receives $40k /y in military retirement and 80k /y in income from their post-military full-time-job he now would only have a taxable income of 80k, not 120k. This will likely halve their total tax payments by keeping them in lower tax brackets. Also, at higher income levels this will prevent military retirement pay from potentially triggering AMT thresholds. This is great policy for military families and will allow them the stability in retirement that they often missed during a career of military relocations.
# College tuition for children of military retirees will be more affordable due to less taxation.
# Regions of the country, such as the Second Congressional District of Maryland, with many military retirees will see increased activity in the local economy. Many residents in the area with more of their money in their pocket to spend as they see fit is exactly what local economies need in these turbulent financial times.

If elected, Richard Matthews will work hard for comprehensive tax reform in Washington, eventually ending the IRS as we know it. As a way to start who better than our military retirees to try out living with out the IRS? Haven’t these people sacrificed enough to protect America’s liberty?
