Retired Marine Told To Remove 'Marine Stickers' From Car...

So you think it's OK to tell people what to do on their private property? And that we should be able to suppress the constitution?

Not sure why you have a problem with the constitution, maybe China is a better fit for you.

The first amendment has to do with the GOVERNMENT prohibiting free speech.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Are HOA rules written into the people deeds when they buy the property? If it is the people were stupid enough to pay for property that didn't give them full rights and signed a contract acknowledging it.

HOA rules change all the time.

It's Mommy "government" at it's worse. A few people with agendas get on the Board, and they make rules and spend tons of money. We had an "assessment" of $15k to modify some second floor balconies (every owner has to pony up when there is an "assessment"). That's in addition to monthly HOA fees of $300. Everything that applies to big government applies to HOAs. Corruption, insider deals, special interests, whiny neighbors who can make rules, etc...

I don't think this guy bought his vehicle from the HOA, HOA only exist per the purview of state law. In essence they are acting as a government agency. They may actually be overstepping their legal authority since essentially the state owns your vehicle since you have to pay to license it.

First of all, I hate Home Owners Associations. I wouldn't buy a house where one existed. But, if people CHOOSE to do so, they freely enter into a contract.

Seems like a case of buyer beware. I guess this is one of the downsides of freedom; we have to take responsibility for our own decisions.

Another thing to add about HOAs. They will usually hire a Property Management Company, which takes care of day to day operations. They take a lot of authority upon themselves, and are quite the little Hitlers all on their own. They do quite a few things without consulting the HOA Board (Board is made up of owners who get voted in).

It's an easily corrupted system. For instance, either the Property Management company or a home-owner (insider) can be secretly associated with a contractor. They will then lobby for the services of that contractor. Usually they are successful. As I often repeat in other threads, any large pot of socialized money is nothing but a magnet for corruption and rip-offs. It's a basic rule.

Your parents shouldn't live there if they don't like the rules. It is not uncommon for HOA's to have rules about blocking the view of the water.

They specifically did not join the HOA. The fact is that the assholes got the county government to do it. They represented the HOA, which my parents refused to join. The county board disregarded that fact and imposed their ruling. How can you be subject to a set of rules for private property if you specifically never gave consent to be run by them?

So do we all agree that HOA is a prime example of government? Easily corruptable, pandering, police state, communist, political agendas, etc. Do you really need HOA? There is plenty of city and county laws to be enforced that keeps your house looking pleasant. I'll say no way to HOA.

Well that sucks. :(
