Restaurants and Inflation

Damn toilet paper makers, putting large holes in the middle!

I think we are going to start seeing prices take off from here. Or the toilet paper makers will make bigger holes.

smaller case (and can) sizes will be viewed as "product improvements" and thus not be reflected in CPI calculations....

McDonalds food has gotten much smaller and they are taking away their $1 menu. A lot of restaurants are cutting back. My normal lunch has probably been scaled back by 100 calories. I noticed a smaller container, and they took it off their "specials"

Dollar stores are selling a lot of products for $1.59 and whatnot now.

last time, same brand. Barely makes 1 decent sandwich. Toilet paper roll has a gigantic hole in the middle now and less sheets. Yet commodities are dropping like a rock? They must have locked in high priced contracts for supplies, seems a good time to start a food business. Anyone wanna start a canned soup business to put the fat guys outta business?

Scott tissue or its store brand equivalent is what we buy...1000 sheets per roll!!! With 7 children it takes a ton of the other stuff to make it through the week.

LOL, I already bought 200 rolls of Scott 1000 sheets per roll way back six months ago. I guess I'll still have a lot left for another year or so. :D

I have not noticed if they have made the cardboard inner roll bigger now though.

The small ice cream shop i work at had to raise its prices because of the raise in minimum wage (which hasn't helped stop poverty at all) here in michigan from $5.?? a hour to $7.35 a hour. Good job Granholm, you caused prices to go up you STUPID IDIOT ---I HATE YOU AND NOW YOU ARE ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL.--NOW YOU ARE GOING TO SCREW EVERYONE!!!

I was shocked at the size of portions of food you people are expected to eat.Way too much for a self-respecting anatomy. If i cut it in two it would still be too much. Still i know thats beside the point. However, ponder this, inflation could be good for weight reduction and health bills.
No comment re the toilet paper...;)

We were a rural farming culture up until a couple of generations ago (and still are to a greater degree than most Western countries), our portions reflect that.

One problem we have that our government has an embargo against Cuba. This means that sugar is not as cheap as it should be because we are not allowed to trade. So alternatives, such as high fructose corn syrup, are used as a substitute. This is of course causing many health problems.

So we're going to start measuring calories per dollar now? :( Sounds like we're headed for a depression and bread/soup lines.

They didn't raise their prices, in general, at the same percentage that their input costs when up, because if they had, nobody would have bought their products. So they need to eat some of those costs themselves if they can, and when the input prices drop they will keep their pricing structure higher as long as possible to recover those costs. But if this deflation continues well into 2009, you will begin to see prices drop a lot more also in 2009.
Competition should kick in here soon and the supplier to lower their prices first will see an upsurge in sales.

we print out price changes every day at work... sometimes they are going down sometimes up... however i do notice a bigger percentage of raised prices, and the differences... when something goes down its usually by 30 cents or so when it goes up its around 70 cents or more

Competition in my opinion has been keeping the prices low for the past 8 years. Most things that could be made overseas by the cheapest labor in the world already are. Most services in this country that can be done by the cheapest labor possible(immigrants) already are.

Businesses will go under, to give the surviving businesses an ability to raise prices.

Wow you're going to be unprepared when the SHTF, only 200 rolls. :D

At my local pet food store (which mostly sells organic/healthy pet food and is not a major chain), the price of canned cat food went up about 20% for all brands since the beginning of October, including the big Wellness brand.

And when they start raising prices more business will start up to compete with them because there is a place they can get an edge in the marketplace.
