Reno School Cop Shoots Teen Victim of Bullying in the Chest—District Praises Cop

I feel like you're conflating the "did this person act appropriately given the situation" with a MUCH larger issue, "should there be police." If he was a private citizen, the 'good guy with a gun', would it be ok? If a gun owner sees a teen assaulting numerous other teens with knives, should they react?

No,,, it is not ok for anyone to shoot him.

It was unnecessary and excessive.

grab the kid. pin him. and if you get cut,,, so effin' what?

After all the years and years and years of myself and others posting stories just like this, you honestly believe that cop had the interests of the "other kids" in mind?

Seriously?

And Pete's right.

Any person with just a lick of self defense instincts or training could have easily disarmed that kid.

I've done it myself, under similar circumstances, and everybody walked away.

Sorry, are you guys seeing a different video than me? The kid is slashing at the other kids with 2 large knives. I would have shot a lot earlier if I was either a parent or security guard.

One of the times that use of force is ACTUALLY appropriate is when you or others are threatened with imminent bodily harm. Had it just been a cop and the kid, sure, tase him, use something "non lethal". But he wasn't a threat to the cop so much as he was to the other kids, over whom the cop had apparently very little control.

IF (big if) we are going to have police at all, this is literally what they are for.

Well, we don't live in a free society. I hope we get there and can get rid of policing in general.
(But I'm pretty sure it's 2016 in the USA.)

Disarming a clearly extremely upset teen with 2 knives is easy? When he's running at/trying to stab other children? Maybe when he's tired himself out from stabbing people?

I would bet all the money I have in the world that in the alternative universe where this cop DIDNT shoot, half this board would be complaining about how pointless cops are, overpaid bureaucrats with guns. The other half would be saying "this is why teachers should be armed, so they can stop school stabbings and shootings", wishing for essentially the same outcome.

See post #17 & #22. Just because one has a gun does not mean one has to use it.

Correct. He could have let the kids get stabbed, or tried to wrestle with the disturbed kid with knives.

It's not about you/the cop. It's about the other kids. The cop was never in danger BECAUSE he has a gun. The other kids dont HAVE guns; it's a school, so I'm assuming guns are not allowed if knives aren't.

To each their own, everyone. I'm no fan of cops, especially in my work in criminal public defense. I've reviewed enough disturbing body/dash cam footage to convince me that policing is fundamentally flawed and should be eliminated. But just like I think the Fed should be ended, I can still criticize it for being PARTICULARLY bad on a given day. In this case, I'm giving the cop a pass for being particularly reserved. He waited much longer than any NYC cop would have, and he fired once. There'd be more holes than body left if that was a NYC school.

Perhaps my jadedness is just showing, in that seeing a cop ONLY shoot once seems like a huge victory. Judge me if you will, but I'm quite convinced this kid was lucky THIS particular cop was on duty, rather than just about any other.

Not judging you,, rather the state of the world.

and likely some jadedness,(I contest with that too) at the state of things.

Perhaps many years of being disarmed,,, but there are alternatives to guns.

I suppose when you put it like that he was lucky that only one shot was fired as oppose to emptying the magazine, reloading, then emptying it again. I'm just saying I was in the EXACT same situation without the benefit of a gun and I handled it. No other kids got stabbed, though there were plenty of kids being chased around camp and the only harm was a broken/bloody nose.

Hug student shot by police officer to move to rehab
by Siobhan McAndrew

The family of a Hug High School freshman shot by a Washoe County School District police officer on Dec. 7 said the 14-year-old is doing well.

“He has made drastic improvements,” Devin Clark, the older brother of Logan Clark, said Monday morning.

Logan, was shot in the chest at the high school of about 1,400 students in north Reno. Police said he would not drop knives he was carrying and waving around a crowd of students.

Logan was in critical condition after having surgery to remove part of his lung. Days later he had a stroke and was in a medically induced coma at Renown Regional Medical Center.

Devin,16, said his brother will move to a rehabilitation hospital in the next day or two. He said Logan has moved out of the intensive care unit and is communicating with his family.

“He is responding to us and is letting us know what he needs,” Devin said of notes his brother is writing on a notepad. He said his brother will go to a rehabilitation hospital to relearn how to talk, use his right arm and walk.

Devin said he and other family members spent the holidays at Logan’s bedside.

“It was a good holiday because my brother is going to be OK,” Devin said. “That’s all we wanted.”

Officer Tim Broadway of the Reno Police Department said the investigation of the police officer-involved shooting is still ongoing. He said new information may be available next week. Police and the school district have not identified the officer.
