I have three dead Seagate Barracuda drives on my table. One died within a month, two within a year. The one which died within a month even had a dedicated fan under it. Seagate requires the customer to pay for shipping on returns. I think I'm done with them.

Anyone work with a large quantity of hard drives have a decent-priced standard desktop 1tb+ drive to recommend?

Have you tried Western Digital? I have bought about 10 or so over the years and never had one last less than 5 years. Of course not all of them are greater than 1TB. If you do get one make sure you do advanced formating to improve performance. You don't have to use their windows utility to format. You can also use parted which is detailed under their linux section. www.wdc.com/advformat

Tigerdirect's unloading hard drives today.

7200 rpm 500gb, 16mb cache @ $40
7200 rpm 2tb, 64mb cache @ $110

Seagate will possibly (they demand specific packaging which I don't have) be sending me back a replacement on the primary drive... Might pick up the 500gb model to hold installation & media files on, so when people off this computer access the files, there won't be any hang for resources while I'm doing something.

Alternately, I have a WD & Seagate drive here still I could set up in a 400 gb mirrored array, which would probably be even safer (and cheaper).

If you do go with WD get the 64MB cache version. The added memory is great for performance. That is a good price for the 2TB drive.

Help!

I just recently bought a WD My Book and hate the backup interface that it makes you use, I just want to drag and drop the files/folder structures that I already have set up.

Does someone know how to disable the stupid auto backup software that comes with WD portable drives?

Maybe its just me and I need to learn how to use the software that comes with it but whatever happened to drag and drop.

Seagate is the biggest organization of horse-fucking fuck-fuckers I've ever encountered. After conforming to their outlandish packaging requirements for NON-FUNCTIONAL hard drives, they sent me back my same hard drives with a "Seagate Recertified Hard Drive" sticker on the front.

Guess fucking what?! THEY STILL DON'T FUCKING FUNCTION! I paid a shipping charge and added implied cost for the warranty, and they send me back the exact same fucking drives with the exact same fucking problems! Now, they'll want me to pay another shipping fee - to receive a new fucking sticker, I'm sure.

:o On a better note - the WD drive I've had for years still works fine. I think I'm going to make it my boot drive instead of these bullshit drives.

But still - Once I get this Hiren's disk burned and run another HD test, I'm going to unload on whichever poor Indian sap I connect with and demand he quit his job on principle!

And of course, the drives failed Seagate's own fucking diagnostics test. Wtf is wrong with these people?

Edit: fuuuuuuuuuuuck their phones only operate Mon-Fri.:mad::mad:

While on the topic of asshole companies and in need of venting, let me tell you about the LiPo battery charger I ordered in early September from "RC & ME Hobbies."

I waited until the 7th of October to finally email them, asking where my product was. A week without response, I call them. Nobody's there - during hours they have listed as times they should be in. I call every 10-30 minutes for a couple hours. Finally, someone picks up. "Sorry, but the guy who handles that won't be in for, uh... another hour or so, okay?" "Alright. Thanks."

Hour later, I call. "Hi, my names x, I ordered x in x, but my package still hasn't arrived." "YOU'RE JOKING!!!" "..." "Alright, what's the order number?" "x" "Well let me check in on that. I'll have to contact the shipping department, so...." "Alright. Thanks."

One week later, I call. "Hi, I'm x calling about the x I called about last week. I ordered it in September and never received it." "Alright, what's your order number?" "x" "Alright, well - our shipping department isn't in right now, so I'll have to call you back later, okay? "Mm." It was the same guy I talked to last time.

Wtf. Their shipping department isn't in? Well where the fuck is it? It apparently hasn't shown up for weeks.

Edit: Alright, the dextrose tablets have worn down and I can laugh at the absurdity of the situations. In fact -- lol. And a correction -- I ordered the product in the end of August. They didn't ship it until September 10th, though the USPS doesn't acknowledge anything was physically sent.

Any drive other than Seagate at 1TB and 1.5TB should be fine. It was just a bad batch and just about every major brand now is pretty much equally reliable. I have 3 Seagate external drives sitting on my desk and have worked perfectly for 1-3 years, but you couldn't pay me enough to play the return game with their 1,1.5 drives.
