I never owned a Catechism as a Catholic. I went to a RC grade school, HS and we even had a church ON the school property. I was baptized in the RCC as well, went to many a mass.
Coming out of the protestant faith myself, I had many Catholic friends who told me that they never got anything from their teaching that it was mostly a boring ritual that meant nothing to them.
Personally/myself--there was a time when I would have never thought I'd be subscribing to the Catholic faith--not Roman, but EOC because at that time--I'd been too indoctrinated by the protestants and had never actually done a thorough study of the Gospels by comparison. Many of the protestants are so far off that what they teach is not even close to the true Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I don't agree with the Papacy--that was my big stumbling block--until the EOC--but now then--there is something else that's bothering me also. One thing that's always been clear to me is that when the Lord wants me to do something--He clears the path to where I can see where I'm going and nothing gets in the way.
I don't believe that there's any perfect church on earth--there are only those that come closer to the mark, but then--does that mean that's close enough to want to subscribe to every jot and tittle of it. Would that get one any closer to the Lord--than simply following the path that's clearly been set in front of you.
You must absolutely study the word of God in prayer to come to your own conclusions based upon what the Holy Spirit has revealed to you. You must also listen to others and find out what they believe and understand that before you can come to any good conclusion based upon honest and sincere seeking before subscribing to anything. This doesn't mean that what someone else subscribes to is wrong for them--it only means that what God has planned for yourself, just might be something all together different. The one thing I won't do is presume upon God for anything.
The Holy Spirit moves spontaneously and harmoniously within the body of Christ as a whole. The Holy Spirit will fall upon whom He will, when He chooses at any time. You can not place Him in a box and say that He will only do something at some appointed set time. I have seen the spirit of the Lord in both Catholic and Protestant churches. He goes wherever true believers reside. So I don't agree with you when you broad-brush the entire Catholic denomination with your condemnation of them. Where I believe that the Catholics have the Gospel of Jesus Christ spot on the mark--I also see other problems as well. Where I see many protestants teaching another gospel, I also see where they have some things right also. IMO--the Gospel takes precedence over anything else, because that is what saves souls. It is the heart and life of the word of God--get the Gospel of Jesus Christ wrong--and nothing else can be reconciled--yet and still--a true believer in the Lord can even overcome this by simply living the two greatest commandments in the Bible---Love God and others the same as you love God.
