Ransomware Attacks Hitting Everywhere! (Except Banks?)

Think a bank would publicize the fact if they were the victim of an attack? (Everywhere as far as business type? The article only mentions healthcare businesses).

Sorry, Zippy. I agree with you but the original OP was by some hacker group. I only just now got my account back after paying a ransom. Pardon, mon frere.

(Except Banks?)

Seems they have been hitting banks too. http://elpais.com/elpais/2017/05/12/inenglish/1494588595_636306.html

Spain’s biggest telecoms operator suffers internal malware attack

The CNI intelligence agency confirms “ransomware” attack has also affected other companies

Spain’s former state telecommunications company Telefónica suffered a malware attack on Friday, which affected the computers of the personnel working at the central headquarters in Las Tablas, Madrid. The computer virus caused computers to crash, leaving blue screens and rendering devices useless.

Hours later, the cryptology branch of Spain’s National Intelligence Center (CNI) confirmed that the virus was affecting a number of other organizations. “There has been a warning over a massive ransomware attack on a number of organizations and that affects Windows systems, encrypting all of their files and the network units to which they are connected, infecting the rest of the Windows systems on the said network,” the CNI said. Ransomware programs render users’ computers useless, until a financial payment is made to the hackers, who then unlock the machines.

Reports were also being circulated on Friday that the same virus was affecting other companies in Spain, such as consultancy firm KPMG, banks BBVA and Santander, power company Iberdrola and telecoms giant Vodafone. Twitter users claiming to be employees of said companies reported the attack, with some claiming they had received requests to pay in bitcoin to have their machines unlocked. So far, however, none of these companies has officially admitted they have been affected.

Yeah, various hacks have been hitting banks and SWIFT and other infrastructure. I think they have to include banks, since it looks to me like that's part of a narrative about banks being hacked that will come in handy in the future, a la Mr. Robot.

Well, in the OP's defense, there is a question mark on the end of that. (except banks?)

I wonder how long before Wikileaks is demonized for this. CIA Director makes a big impassioned speech about Wikileaks after they dump all this stuff that these "hackers" have supposedly weaponized.

Think legislation mandating individuals keep there OSs' updated? Sources I've read all assign a lions share of the blame to ppl who dont update.

False Flag. They are going after Bitcoin.

This too. But its a poor way to do it. Advertising the security of the medium of echange that is bit coin... ie sophisticated hackers have faith that bit coin exchanges cannot be tracked. I need to read more about it. Not for information, of course, but to parse the propaganda.

They want legislation.

Should the NSA be liable for all the damage caused by its viruses?

Should Microsoft? The exploit has been around since Windows XP, with apparent knowledge by Microsoft. Yet Microsoft did not release a patch until March 2017.

And so the penny drops. As Michael Rivero says often on his internet show, if the NSA is monitoring and tracking everybody's communications forwards and backwards, how come they haven't tracked down where the ransomware is coming from?
