(CNN) - A day after endorsing Mitt Romney, Sen. Rand Paul said it would be an honor to run alongside the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.

"A year, year and a half ago, I was a physician in a small town," Paul, the junior Republican senator from Kentucky, told CNN's Don Lemon. "And it would be a great honor to be considered as a vice president for the Republican Party. I think that would be something that anybody who said otherwise would not be being truthful."

Paul, who on Thursday came out in support of Romney, said on CNN he had not discussed with the candidate the prospect of joining the GOP ticket.
Paul, a tea party favorite and son of presidential candidate Ron Paul, said his father "has always been my first choice," but that the nominating process favored Romney.

"The nomination is now done and Romney has achieved the amount of delegates necessary to be the nominee," Paul said. "Those are just facts. And I've decided to endorse Romney after meeting with him and talking about a lot of areas that we actually do have common ground on."

His announcement came one day after his father acknowledged he would not become the Republican nominee, despite maintaining for months that he would stay in the fight for the White House.

Ron Paul ended his official campaign events weeks ago, but he's still technically a presidential candidate and will have delegates at the Republican National Convention in August.

CNN's Ashley Killough contributed to this report.

Smells like a deal was made, though it's still seems impossible to imagine Romney picking Rand Paul.

Awesome! Maybe Rand can be the tiebreaker vote in the Senate for the Iran war!!!

i'll say what i've been saying for months now.... Rand will NOT be Romney's veep selection. He can gain much more with a Haley or Rubio selection. On top of that Rand's grand stands in the Senate will merely bogg down Mitt's campaign. He doesn't want to constantly have to answer for Rands opposition to the patriot act, spice laws, CRA, and other abstract issues.

Its hardly the massive betrayal some people say it is, our chance at an outright win ended weeks ago when Benton released those stupid emails.

Were I a voting American and Rand was the VP, I would be pleased that Romney had a decent VP and proceed to vote Johnson or Goode since Romney would only be worth backing if his entire cabinet was that good.

Misleading. Watch the vidoe of the interview. He's said this for a while now, that it would be an honor just to be considered, which it is, but that he has no plans to do so (or didn't previously and says they didn't discuss it).

Don't act like the media and continue to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

The movement might not like it, but Rand Paul will likely be the most influential person carrying our ideas deep into the party very soon. Forsake him if you must, but he'll probably convert the masses to liberty just as well, if not better than his father has.

There are two people in the race, and Rand endorsed the wrong one. It's a betrayal even after Ron drops out. Romney is not conservative, and is not an advocate for limited government.

If Rand is influential, that's really bad as he will apparently be sending people to Mitt Romney.

This. No way Romney picks Rand.

Sometimes for the good of the cause you have to be a politician. Something his father is not.

Not so. He may have just sent me to Obama just for spite. Maybe several more if I have anything to do with it.

Actually, he said his first pick is always his father. RP admitted defeat. So I would disagree with your wording at least.

It's a betrayal even after Ron drops out. Romney is not conservative, and is not an advocate for limited government.

I went to my county convention last night among a number of organized RP supporters. We played along with procedures, clapped for things we found questionable. Wore stickers for politicians we find questionable... And then a number of us got elected to the state convention.

I hope you don't feel betrayed by us. I don't believe any of us would compromise our principles. I also don't believe that we would have had the same success had we showed up in Ron Paul gear and shouted about ending wars and the constitution. We can be more gentle in redirecting the party without giving an inch on our positions.
