Rand can be on the ballot for the Senate primary - I guess that is May in Kentucky.

Before then, and after then, on every other state primary ballot up until the June/July National Convention
he can be on the GOP ballot for delegates to the National GOP Presidential Convention - held at Quicken Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

If he were to win GOP Presidential nomination, then and only then would it be decision time for Kentucky ballots - Senator or United States President.

McCain is in the 2016 - 2010 - 2004 cycle . . . he was not up for re-election in 2008 when he was the nominee . . .
McCain had a major come from behind nomination win after Iowa loss.

Rand is in the same cycle 2016 - 2010 . . . and so is Florida Senator Marco Rubio btw.

If Rand was the presidential nominee, I suppose there are a few different scenarios possible,
that is some 15 months from now - could he keep the senate seat after he wins the GOP primary in May by write-in ? I think he would be on that ballot already.

I believe according to KY law, a write in candidate is ineligible if they are already on the ballot for another office, so that won't work. Fortunately though, as long as there is someone else in the GOP Senate primary race, he has until May to decide whether or not to drop out. Unless there is some other way for the KY GOP to put someone else's name on the ballot even though Rand won the GOP senate primary.

May is plenty of time though. It should be pretty obvious by then if he has a good chance to win the presidential nomination.

Maybe . . . or maybe NOT. Nobody may have the needed majority

California GOP delegates are late as usual (June ?) - expect Rand to win them easily.

What I am seeing is Rand is in the President's nomination race through it's completion - ALL - THE - WAY
He will have already won the GOP Senate primary by then . . .

He can push the envelope by challenging the law...he said on Saturday before the vote that he was going to run for both regardless of the Caucus decision...he sounded like a Rand with a plan...

Yeah, the Kentucky law goes against the SCOTUS decision on the US Term Limits case in the 1990s. Should be easy to get it thrown out.

With a democratic governor, it would require a court battle which would not at all be easy nor would it look good.

They could put his wife's name on the ballot, and those Electors vote for Rand at the Electoral College. Depending on the state law, they may alternatively be able to switch the P and VP. In CT, the rule didn't apply to running mates, which is how Biden was able to be on the ballot.

God willing it will be Gov. Matt Beavin (R). He would take office Jan. 2016.

I don't think so. I think that he can actually win both POTUS and Senate seat. If this happens, Governor Matt Beavin would appoint his replacement. I like the sound of Senator Massie. The Dems really don't have a viable candidate. They hitched their wagon too closely with the Obama admin and I think it will be a very chilly day in Hades before the state elects a Dem in these offices. I would be shocked if Jack Conway beats Beavin... He's a total douche and he supported gay marriage when most of the rest of the state doesn't.

About the name substitution and electors, I haven't seen this idea anywhere except in the occasional internet comment. Are there any sources indicating that putting someone else's name on the ballot to stand in is even legal in KY, or that it is on the table being considered as a possibility?

I think it's more likely that Rand would not be on the ballot in KY for President.
