Rand Paul wins Kentucky Caucus battle!

Tweets! (or they didn't happen) ;)
Well...there's this from our favorite psychotic leftist outpost, Mother Jones
@MotherJones: Rand Paul's campaign is going so badly that he may lose twice http _//t.co/QqHn0CJgdK http://t.co/jY9qF8RYpV
@harleypyrate02: Rand Paul allowed to Run for Pres&Senate at Same Time! I CALL BS! ONE OR THE OTHER DUDE! YOURE TOO GREEDY ALREADY! http://t.co/Zzu76y9bC9
and it goes on....all we need now is for the Koch brothers to kick in the $500k...

Being able to be on the ballot for both is great, but the biggest benefit is that now Kentucky - a state he should do well in - is early enough to be relevant.

“This is not about Sen. Paul in my mind. This is about making Kentucky relevant,” committee member Troy Sheldon said. “I think it’s the best thing for voters.”

March 5th will be right after Super Tuesday, and on the same day as the Washington State Caucus - another state he should do well in. So being able to realistically win two states on the same day at that point can be a big shot of momentum going forward.

Talking Point is- complete silence. Ignore it. What the left thinks of Rand Paul is utterly irrelevant and not worth responding to. Only thing that matters is conservative voters and increasing Paul's standing with them. If you say anything, just mention it is a cheap liberal smear to distract from Rand's crusade against birthright citizenship, the payroll tax, and funding planned parenthood.

wait so this benefits both runs right? a caucus for both senator and president?

A (GOP) caucus will be held on March 5th, while the statewide primary in May will still take place. In that primary Kentuckyians will not vote for the GOP presidential candidate, but (amongst other) for the GOP US Senator candidates.

It's kinda weird how someone in favor of Term Limits would fight a law like this.

What's the connection? It is a normal thing for people to run for two offices at once in most states; Paul Ryan did it last time around. And what is the connection to term limits? Makes no sense to me. You must be a troll...please go away.

Oh right, that makes sense. Does any state even do a caucus for non-presidential candidates anyway?

If the KYGOP is going out of the Primary process for the Presidential election, then they have to pay for the infrastructure to make that happen ( I.e. Venues, administrative stuff) for 120 locations across the state. The same would be true if the the democrats wanted a caucus. They only have $170k in their coffers. They intend to use this as a way to get voters across the state to be engaged in the state GOP by having Presidential candidates barnstorming the state, competing for Ky votes. That really hasn't happened for them in a couple of generations because of the way the RNC has approached choosing their nominee months before the actual convention based upon early primary states.
Rand has a reason as well--win/win. Rand isn't buying an election...KY voters still have to vote. And they may not vote for Rand. Buying an election would be like the vote buying that the KY DNC has done for years in state elections where they actually pay people cash to go vote Dem. I really don't think they want to open that can of worms....God forbid the GOP does something to make itself relevant...they have struggled with this since Jackson.

What will be interesting to see will be if anyone decides to primary Rand for the Senate seat. I heard that Trey Grayson was moving back to KY.

Somebody needs to primary him, so that if he is on track to win the presidential nomination he will still be able to drop out of the KY senate primary race. He still can't win both the presidential and senate primaries because then he would be on the ballot twice in the general election. I don't picture him forfeiting KY in the presidential general election, or pulling tricks with electors to still get away with both.

Exactly. Someone still needs to file for Senate so they can step in for him in May and win the Senate primary, if Rand is the presumptive presidential nominee by May.

What's the connection?

The connection is the Supreme Court case in the 90s that said states could not impose term limits on their Congressmen and Senators. SCOTUS ruled that the only requirements to run for federal office were those in the Constitution and the states could not impose additional requirements (ie, the requirement that you have not already been in Congress for 20 years). Thomas wrote a brilliant dissent on that case.

Kentucky imposing additional requirements -- ie no one running for US Senate can also run in a Presidential primary or vice versa -- would run afoul of that SCOTUS ruling. If Rand does get nominated for both offices, that Kentucky law could be easily struck down using the precedent of that case.

Dejavu speak. Heard this same thing last 2 elections. As the words "brokered convention" are already coming up, tells me we are already done.

2020?!

Are you running? Rand already said he would not run every 4 years. This is the only shot we got.

I don't think so. I think that he can actually win both POTUS and Senate seat. If this happens, Governor Matt Beavin would appoint his replacement. I like the sound of Senator Massie. The Dems really don't have a viable candidate. They hitched their wagon too closely with the Obama admin and I think it will be a very chilly day in Hades before the state elects a Dem in these offices. I would be shocked if Jack Conway beats Beavin... He's a total douche and he supported gay marriage when most of the rest of the state doesn't.
i need to do some more research on this, though.

That is gonna be the spin . . . laugh in their faces is the best I got before morning coffee.
Media is going to be pissed off that Rand has two aces in his hand now.

I mean brokered convention in the sense that like Ron, Rand can stay with this all the way through. He can hold on to his delegates.
If no one has enough on the first ballot at the convention, from all the committed delegates from the primary votes like NH,
then every delegate votes their conscience on the second and subsequent ballots until someone wins the nomination.

The current law in KY still prevents Rand from appearing on the same ballot for two different offices. This has been avoided for the primary because of the caucus, but it is still a problem for the general election. He can't be on the general election ballot for both senate and president.

is there enough time to wait until the republican nomination to decide?

Rand can be on the ballot for the Senate primary - I guess that is May in Kentucky.

Before then, and after then, on every other state primary ballot up until the June/July National Convention
he can be on the GOP ballot for delegates to the National GOP Presidential Convention - held at Quicken Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

If he were to win GOP Presidential nomination, then and only then would it be decision time for Kentucky ballots - Senator or United States President.
