Rand Paul Townhall Livestream, 9PM EST

I provide a more technical opinion of the different campaigns rather than angrily shouting falsehoods in a room. There is plenty to attack Trump on which I agree Trump should be attacked on but I am not going discredit myself or Paul supporters by using false talking points directly from the DNC to attack him. If that means I am off base then so be it.

It would not make sense for Trump to do that considering their poll numbers.

Off base probably should have been stated differently. I meant more like overboard.
I'm on your side of this issue but you're getting a little carried away like you're determined to throw cold water on the people who enjoyed it.
I've seen you do the same in other threads regarding trump topics.

At some point it becomes beating a dead horse.
Do you send your critiques to the campaign? I think you should. Often you have valid critiques.
But most times you post them do much that you run the risk of disheartening would be activists in the effort to elect Rand.

I don't think you'll necessarily agree with me, but I wanted to clarify what I meant.
I think you're over stepping on the negativity in this thread.
You've said what needed to be said, why keep raining on their parade?

I'm as frustrated as you right now.

I'm regards to the trump debate, I agree, trump would be dumb to debate rand when rand is losing and he is winning.
But him saying no looks bad too since he acts like such a tough guy.

He's only saying what many of the people posting in this thread said. Read through it.

Here we go again, another example. This should not be happening.

I'm just sick of the CONSTANT negativity! It's annoying. I don't give a crap how many people were saying it. There are better ways to address technical issues than bitching about them in the forum. Fuck it. To be quite honest I just don't like either of your attitudes and think you are a hinderance to moral around here and believe we would be better off without ya. How's that.

I'm just tired of it. I want to blast you guys every time I see most of your posts along with about 2 other negative creeps. But I just keep it to myself. Y'all need some time off.

Spamming the thread with complaints about the broadcast after it was too late to change anything is not only pointless but counterproductive.

im 64 years old and not a computer saavy type, and i had ZERO problems finding and watching.

I think Rand is on to something with this format. Just needs a little tweaking...

Rand was tired, and the next time he does this, it will be much better. Overall...excellent.

All in all, I think the situation worked pretty well for Rand. If he was included on the main stage, he would have been overshadowed and pressured into looking like a xenophobic warmonger. By taking this stand, he has established himself as an iconoclast and can make the case that the establishment is scared of him and wants him muzzled.

Here we go again, another example. This should not be happening.

I scrolled through Twitter and social media to see what the reaction was.

Out of the thousands of comments I read, I saw zero negative comments about the production quality. Literally zero. Not one out of thousands. The only negative are in this thread. There might be some negative comments on Facebook but I didn't look.

I am very critical of the way Rand dresses and sometimes behaves. Just judging purely from the reaction, this was a MONSTER success. Not a small win. A MONSTER success. It doesn't mean he will win. But you are factually wrong to say this was a negative event. It is even debatable. The Daily Show appearance was overwhelmingly well received. His Super PAC pulled had a great quarter and the people who donated like Andy Beal are capable of throwing in huge dollars if Rand has any success. The enthusiasm for his campaign has hit a new high today. It is unwarranted for you to be negative.

Is there any way to watch the entire thing? Facebook only has 20 minutes of it available.

Actually, it looks like you are the one who needs some time off.

Agree. It was by far a better choice than doing the undercard debate, for multiple reasons. He reached more people making media appearances about boycotting the debate than the amount of people that watch the undercard.

And there were some benefits over being in the main debate even.

But, the most important debate is on the 28th in Iowa, just before the caucus. That one is important to be in.

And with the way this has gone I'm more confident than ever that he will be there on the main stage.

The audience he was aiming for is younger and more into this format. Remember he is also going after the people who were not watching the debate

I've never felt older than after reading this thread.

I'm glad he got some actual questions, but I wonder if some of you hear yourselves?

In order to watch the debate, I could turn on my television and type in the channel. If I couldn't find it, I consulted the guide button first. Two seconds, and no outside help required, and there I was.

In order to watch Rand, someone had to send me to a Periscope link, where I sat for some time staring at a screen with information and a button that would link me to a non-Rand video if I clicked it. There were no lasers, but there were little happy hearts in a corner like I was stuck in someone's Lisa Frank nightmare. It didn't refresh automatically when the stream started, so I sat there missing the start of it until I tried refreshing (since it was after the slated start time). The video quality made it pretty obvious no one took a moment to test lighting or how he looked. Those are things done before major photos, videos, etc., but it seems like it's out of style.

Reading through the thread, it seems that to get the most out of my experience, I should have had Twitter, Facebook, Periscope, a smart phone... is that all, guys? Or is there another bunch of social media stuff that I should juggle around?

Again, the substance might have been great, and it's done its duty to get him trending, but FriedChicken has a good idea about how it can improve. I'd love to see something where questions are sent in a little bit ahead of time, and then a bit more care is taken with production value. I'd also love to see Amash, Massie, and even some more internet-y people associated with the campaign asking some of the questions. There are supporters out there. Use them.

Stop taking it as "I hate Rand and I hate that he did this!" and start realizing that, without any constructive criticism, you get the same (or worse) over and over. It is an improvement over that "follow me all day" nonsense. Now THIS needs to improve, too.

it kept up better than FB for me. FB usually buffers and crashes on me multiple times
I found it really easy. I downloaded the Periscope app, logged in with my Twitter account, followed Rand. And it notified me every time he was live. One click to start the feed....easy. What I like about Facebook is that it records the event so I can watch it when I want to.

I think it was a poorly calculated strategy if they wanted critical mass audience but if they were going for the youth vote (this is his key target demo in IA/NH) then maybe they got pretty much what they wanted.

You just have to be able to see it from different points of view.

this.

dummies on here spouting crap and havent a clue about intended audiences.

Hey, lets compare trumps production for old white men sitting at home on a couch to a production for college students on the go.

Genius!

I understand commenting that it wasn't a slick HD production. I'm guessing they used Periscope because they were at the Twitter HQ, and Twitter owns Periscope.

I don't think it was too hard to find though. You didn't need to follow each new link... they were all at http://Periscope.tv/DrRandPaul

And on Facebook I got a notification on my phone that "Rand Paul is Live". Clicked that and it brought the stream up.

I understand that out of everyone some people would have trouble and either couldn't watch or didn't like it... but if it really were such a failure how was he able to gain the second most Twitter followers and be the only candidate trending throughout the main debate?

shhhhhhhhhhhh....too many facts here.

At one point I had it playing on 2 different screens via for different methods. It easy.

Phone said "Rand is live streaming"...I tapped the notification, and voila, there was Rand.

Uh, Perisccope was not hard to use. My only complaint is I had to go back to the original link later and hit refresh to catch his next two videos, so I missed some of it live. Not bad for a last minute plan.

If you find TV easier, it might be because your TV is sitting in nice view of where your landline is plugged in, next to the couch where you knit sweaters for your grandchildren.

People have to apply 80/20 rule on anything new and innovative. National town hall on an online platform is untried for any candidate and Rand gave it a shot and in my opinion came out with net positive. It's like a releasing a product. Sure, some things weren't perfect(20%) but overall intention to reach the alternate audience (liberty crowd, millennials, indies, on-the-fence-dems,etc) was met(80%).

Overall it was a success and saying it otherwise is just immature and seeing the trees for forest.

Rand Paul literally trended all day yesterday... Three separate times actually. His digital media team was on point. Rand's stream was watched by hundreds of thousands of people either live or after (The videos are still up on his FB and twitter).. He has raised a ton of money the last several hours. Last night was a TOTAL win.

im 64 years old and not a computer saavy type, and i had ZERO problems finding and watching.

I'm 68 years old and I found the site with some help from other people on this forum. Once I figured out what periscope was and found the site, I had no problems until he took a break, I didn't know there was a new url, but people here informed us all of that and I later discovered I had received an email from the campaign giving me the new url. I felt really excited about the whole way it was presented. I thought it was very intimate, with Rand just sitting there, not behind a podium or desk, it felt very personal. I liked seeing all of the comments and questions displayed as submitted and the heart bubbles, which I did not know what it meant until someone here explained it. I also kept twitter open at the same time so I could check in there to see what was happening. I felt calm and at peace when it was over, unlike watching the faux debates where it is very irritating to see Rand ignored and his questions given to Cruz...I usually feel really agitated when it is over...this time I went to bed happy. I think it was a winner! I do think if it could be on YouTube you would get more people, particularly older people. I am moderately technical as I have to be to earn a living, but only learn what I have to learn to do what I want and need to do...(didn't grow up with it). But most people know and understand YouTube.

k I guess I rescind it all, Periscope is easier than turning on a television, and nothing at all was wrong with this broadcast. Not a single improvement can be made. Saying otherwise is being old and stupid and negative.

Now where's all my little heart bubbles of agreement?
