Rand Paul to open political office in Austin

Sen. Rand Paul is planning to open a political office in Austin, tapping into Texas technology talent ahead of a likely presidential bid.

The space is slated to open in spring or early summer, said Doug Stafford, Paul’s chief political adviser. The Kentucky Republican is also opening a Silicon Valley office in the coming months.

ustin is a rare haven for liberals in deep-red Texas, but it’s also a hot spot for start-ups and technology companies. The libertarian-leaning Paul has made overtures to the technology community — even in California’s progressive Bay Area — as he prepares for a 2016 campaign.

“Our intention is to crowd source many things — innovations, applications, volunteer efforts on the digital and political side,” Stafford said in an email. “Austin has a lot of supporters and a lot of talent, and we plan to take advantage of both and have a Team Rand hub there.”

Vincent Harris, the digital strategist for Paul’s political arm, RANDPAC, is based in Austin, which he referred to as “Silicon Hills.”

The city “has energetic, supportive, creative talent,” Harris said. “There’s a large, active, liberty crowd. Since coming on board, we’ve had smart people literally just show up at my company’s office wanting to get involved, it will be a place to channel them.”

The Lone Star State will loom large in the 2016 GOP primary. Paul and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush grew up in Texas. They, along with former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, all are expected to run for the White House.

“We want to attract the best talent possible to help motivate the largest amount of people possible, and Austin’s market will allow the senator to do that,” Harris said.

At this point, what serious steps have Perry or Cruz taken to setup a run for President?

Wonder if he'll go on Alex Jones' show again

No point to. Everyone that listens to Alex already knows who Rand is and should support him. Back in 2007 it helped having Ron Paul on because it opened people up to libertarian-ism. Helped swayed me from thinking I was a anti-war democrat to a libertarian.

My thoughts exactly. He's been helpful in the past, but we've reached the point where going on Alex Jones has no upside and a considerable downside.

With respect to Ron Paul at least, the "helpfulness" of Alex Jones wasn't really the point. Ron always goes on Alex Jones because Alex Jones always invited Ron Paul on to his show in the past going way back to the days when the MSM didn't know who the hell Ron Paul was and would rather gouge their eyes out than give somebody like Ron airtime to express alternative views. Ron's character is such that he's not going to start snubbing Jones now just because the "cool kids" have finally deemed him worthy enough to be invited on to mainstream shows. That's just not Ron Paul.

Rand is a lot more cold and calculating than his father, but I suspect at least part of the reason Rand agreed to do Jones' show earlier in his career had something to do with basic decency and showing a little respect to a guy who has always been supportive of his family long before it became popular to do so. But like I said, Rand is more practical than his father so I expect him to leave the Alex Jones appearances to his Dad from now on.

Do you know what I think these offices could also be for? In Cali, that office could help get Arturo Alas elected this time. That office in Texas could help someone who may have been mentioned on this site before get elected or Re-elected. Cheers to more offices in more states!
