Earlier footage posted by American Bridge shows Chesley and a cameraman exchanging words before the town hall event. Chesley positions himself in front of the camera, licks the lens and murmurs softly, "This is a closed event."

Kinda funny.

The more i read about it, the more i cant stop laughing.

"The culprit behind the "I licked it, so now it's mine" move was David Chesley, Rand Paul's political director in New Hampshire. The man behind the camera was from American Bridge 21st Century, a liberal super PAC that tracks Republican candidates. Chesley responded the way that any rational adult would: by licking the camera used to film the event."

That guy licked the camera to distract the oppo while Matt Collins made a daring escape.

I was there today. Rand did great, except he kept calling the town Londonberry rather than Londonderry.

Lost in the "lick"... :p

Senator Rand Paul visited New Hampshire today to accept the endorsement of twenty New Hampshire State Representatives who support his run for the White House, and to visit with and take questions from the voters of NH," campaign communications director Sergio Gor said in a statement. "It was a great day of events.

Any pictures? Other thoughts?

There were a lot of older people there and a lot of very young people as well. He was asked some very good questions after his speech. His speech was pretty much the same as usual. He was asked about...

  • Social Security: He said we need to raise the retirement age gradually and do means testing.
  • VA Hospitals: He said he's worked in a few of them and they're actually not bad, except for the long waits. He said he would like to allow for vouchers so veterans can go to local hospitals for certain procedures if it's more convenient for them.
  • Iran: Pretty much the same stuff he's been saying.
  • Immigration: As Milton Friedman said, we can't have open borders and welfare at the same time. Without a border, you have no country, but we are a country of immigrants so he's for Legal immigration.

He also took a shot at McCain for saying he would support sending American citizens to Guantanamo if they are dangerous, and at Jeb for saying that the best thing about Obama has been the expansion of the NSA surveillance. "I'm not gonna mention any names but he's a former governor of Florida". That got some laughs.

And just like that, the 20 endorsements gets completely lost as every media outlet picks up on the stupid camera lick. I expect more professionalism out of Rand's major campaign staff. I'm sure big donors love this kind of stuff too.

What was he thinking?? It's such a ridiculous distraction. Rand had a great day in NH and now shit like this is all over the media.

It is not helpful to win the general election. Winning the nomination while losing in the general election would be worse than not winning the nomination.

You are correct that this is not helpful for the general election, but as far as the primary goes, this will probably end up helping Rand as the liberal PAC that the cameraman is working for is pretty strongly hated by Republicans from sea to shining sea.

It should be noted that George W. Bush was heard on camera calling a hostile New York Times reporter an asshole during his 2000 presidential campaign and he still got 2 terms. I wouldn't get too tied up in knots over this. At worst, the staffer that did this will get thrown under the bus just like the guy who stepped on that George Soros lackey during Paul's senate run and Rand will have to make some boring public apology.
