Rand Paul should attend a UFC

I said this some time back as Vegas has a good amount of fighters and fight fans plus the free air time. The July event features a former Pat Militech coached fighter from Iowa that currently is the Welterweight champion in Robbie Lawler. First thing the campaign needs to do is outreach in Davenport, Iowa with Pat Militech. There is plenty of time for Rand to go to Vegas for a UFC.

I question that. Id like to see what 3 or 4 points in a poll looks like in terms of real numbers..

yeah, I don't think it would affect the polls all that much immediately; but it definitely would be good for buzz/publicity and attract a possibly avid fanbase.

FSP-Rebel mentioned this April when Don Frye endorsed. Can't see any downside by him attending and see potential for big upsides. He should go.

MMA is fast becoming more popular than boxing, if it isn't already.

Looks like Benton's ad might end up being prophetic

Did they just photoshop Rand's head onto Putins body for that?

He's exactly right. IDK why, but pro boxing has been going downhill WRT quality fighters and fights for a rather long time IMHO. The best contemporary boxing I see nowadays comes in the form of muay thai, K1 kickboxing, and UFC.

I think this is actually a great idea all around especially for helping him possibly winning Nevada! Aside from the viewers themselves seeing him in the stands, the amount of media attention he would garner from it would once again be priceless. Go for it Rand, oh and take Vince Vaughn with you!

Campaign during the day, attend the UFC at night. I love the Vince Vaughn idea! Vince would surely do it too!

The more I think about this the more I like it. Just think, these are the kind of people that aren't afraid to stick their necks out for you....Literally. The value Rand could gain from this has enormous potential. You get someone like a Dana White willing to throw money down for you, along with already committed UFC fighters, I could see many more following in line. You do that, then there is certainly the possibility that many more big money people would be willing to start throwing down with you. These fighters might not be billionaires, but they have huge followings not just in the fighting crowd, but the fitness crowd as well. This has potential of a huge upside in many more ways than one!

Yes, but the Fertitta brothers are billionaires and they own the UFC among many other enterprises.

Take an entourage, watch some fights and just have a good time publicly. Spend time talking to fans.

There's a strong strain of libertarianism in the sport of MMA for both the fighters and the fans. The fanbase should be right in Rand's wheelhouse.

Might as well. The candidates are mostly ignoring NV, even though it will be the 4th or 5th state to vote. This is a way to reach young people and Las Vegas folks. Plus he will be entertained. He can do an event at his CA office the same day so it will be a win-win.

Why? Voters wouldn't know or care about this. It sounds a bit silly.

Silly like playing saxophone on Arsenio Hall or playing bass guitar on tv like Huckster does?

It humanizes him. Voters like that kind of stuff. The whole "who do you want to have a beer with" mentality.

I question that. Id like to see what 3 or 4 points in a poll looks like in terms of real numbers. It seems like you are assuming that there are millions upon millions of people who like UFC that would suddenly start supporting Rand Paul.

And you forget that for every person you impress there's anther half a person who gets pissed about something.

I don't know about points in a poll, but the UFC is huge in two of the early caucus states (Iowa and Nevada). And getting a few hundred or thousand extra caucus goers can be the difference in winning or losing.

This, exactly.

If Rand can go to the Kentucky Derby to meet with Murdoch there is no reason he can't go to a UFC match to energize his base and win over the plebs. :)

Edit: Also we are literally talking about two or three seconds of air time on the big screen, I doubt he would have a chance to speak or anything like that. Not a lot of negative that can be generated, but the positives could come in future endorsements from other fighters that may sway hundreds in Iowa (as mentioned) in that community who may already be accepting of the liberty message.

Not sure when the vote in New York is going to happen to make professional MMA sanctioned. For years UFC has been trying to get NY (the last hold out state) to have a sanctioning body make professional MMA legal. I know the reality is it's going to happen this year and there is a vote at some point, so the fight at Madison Square Garden happens at the end of the year. If the campaign reaches out to Dana White perhaps Rand can say something about supporting the legislative effort there and therefore supporting the sport, along with an appearance in July would be amazing.

Edit2: Nevermind looks like the New York vote will happen in two weeks, this would have to be a quick turn around. For those that are interested looks like it's going to be Weidman and Rockhold.

I think it's a good idea but does Rand even like to watch fights like this? That would probably be the biggest issue.

It would be cool if grassroots would talk to someone from campaign about this and not just to a wall (screen, ether).

Volunteers who joined "Bloggers for Rand" get regular meetings with campaign. I think RPF joied that group too. Making a list of suggestions and questions that would be then presented to campaign would help a lot with indifference and lack of engagement.

He should go, and when he's questioned by the media he should say that he invited John McCain, but he said he was more a WWE kind of guy.

:D
