[Rand] Paul says chance of brokered convention growing

Why do RP supporters want a brokered convention? There's no way the GOP establishment allows RP to be the nominee...

I never said I wanted it, but I acknowledge that it could happen and we should prepare for the eventuality.

If they're forced to do it by the rules, then it may well be our best chance to secure the nomination. It certainly doesn't hurt the "beauty contest" campaign to play their delegate game too. It is far from the ideal or lone strategy, but if States as a whole won't put us on top, this may be the best chance to. We really have no choice to try every way we can and hope for the best, and this could potentially be a way...

But yes, my fear is also that they're not going to be fair about it, and use this as a jumping point to push whatever destined-to-fail nominee besides Paul the push out. But it doesn't change the fact that we're going to keep trying and challenging them every step of the way.

A brokered convention is better than a straight up loss. However, RP is ON FIRE! Please please debate well tonight Ron. We're pulling for you!

uhhh... because he hasn't won a state yet, and he certainly wont win the nomination outright. Therefore a brokered convention with delegates being able to vote their conscience after a few votes would present our best chance at getting Ron the nomination.

I like that picture in your sig. I checked the source, but it looks like a photo store. Did you make that? If not where was it originally hosted?

On topic.

A brokered convention sounds awesome, but in reality, it is not the ideal path to getting a republican in the wh, much less bringing us closer to reigning in big government.

I guess I would take it, but I'd have to brace myself for the shit storm that would follow should Ron Paul delegates pull it off.

How does that work exactly in a brokered convention? Is it that in the first round, the delegates have to vote for the candidate that won in their State & if nobody gets over 50% the delegates can then vote for whoever they want in the next round?

It sounds like your reality is beginning to shift ;)

Every State has its own rules.

Some like PA are completely unbound, some bound for first vote only, some after second etc.

Exactly - if the establishment aren't going to let Ron Paul win a primary or caucus, why are people delusional into thinking they are going to let him win in a brokered convention.

This is why I have always advocated an Indy run and after March is the perfect time to seriously think that because 34 states will have already been done.

The GOP didn't want Ron Paul to win to begin with, it's not like this is just now becoming an uphill battle. The fact is a brokered convention gives Ron a better chance than he has now.

The phrase "brokered convention" and all its implications (except usually discussing Ron Paul's influences on it) has been mentioned a lot lately.

It would be exciting to wait for the results... so at least it would make for a fun night

How many States will have chosen who their new "establishment" is?

How many will have chosen who the individuals are that will be attending the RNC as delegates?

A brokered convention will be wild and unpredictable. Back in the 60's and earlier, party bosses pretty much controlled state delegations who voted as they were told. I don't remember exactly when - it was the 70's - the rules changed and our current system of primaries/caucuses came into being with delegations committed to the winner of this process and with a clear cut winner decided fairly soon in the process. Conventions became a circus around the chosen nominee. Now- today - delegates are a total wildcard if there is no clear cut winner going into the convention and party bosses no longer have the control over the nominating process that they had mid-20th century. After the first round, if and when candidates begin to withdraw and throw their support behind another candidate, their delegates may or may not follow - almost certainly not 100%. A brokered convention could be historic with an unruly convention floor fight broadcast over national television.

If there is a brokered convention, I heard the MSM wants to air lift Jeb Bush in to be the nominee....
