Rand Paul: Restrict Immigration from Muslim Countries

Rand did not say all Muslims. He was more specific about places that are hotbeds of jihadism.

True, but it is what many here in this thread were proposing as "logical." And pretty much any country that has any Muslim population deals with radical wings of religion, including our ally Turkey in NATO.

My understanding is that the Muslim people have issues with our government...

I'd like to suggest sending our government over there to save them the airfare.........

That's akin to saying something as general as "Christians have issues with [fill in the blank]"

Define "Christians." Catholics, Mormons, Evangelicals, Protestants, Jehovah Witnesses, Christian Scientists, etc.?? They have as many different religious and political views as there are stars in the sky probably. Same with Muslims. Most of the violence committed by Muslim terrorists/extremists in the world today are against other Muslims who do not believe the same things they do.

So would it be okay with you if the US boxed up the sitting administration and shipped 'em overseas?

I think it'd work out well for everybody.

Only if by "overseas" you mean "Antarctica" - and if by "everybody" you mean "everybody except the penguins" ... ;)

Limit all until we get control of the welfare system...yes that is an economic reason.

Of course. But that applies to all immigration, not just the ones that want to kill us. ;)

There was a time when the "libertarian" mantra seemed to be "end welfare (and incentives) before immigration". Apparently anyone who says that now is not allowed in the club anymore.

Yeah, and don't forget Saudi Arabia; George Bush's ally leveling the World Trade Center.

Of course Ron did it because he knew this would expose CIA assets being brought into the US. A large percentage of "terrorists" had US/NATO training at some point. He authored plenty of bills to irk the establishment, knowing they wouldn't even make it out of committee.

Rand is just pandering.

If we had only listened to one of the most brilliant men in our history.

Of course I agree with TJ that we shouldn't invite them by extraordinary encouragements (which is the only policy recommendation Jefferson makes there). Neither should our government do anything to impede their coming here, staying here, or working here.

And what "logic" would that be?

Here are the top 10 Muslim Countries by population:

Rank - Country/capital - Population - Percentage of world's Muslims

1 Indonesia Jakarta 209,120,000 13.1
2 India New Delhi 176,190,000 11
3 Pakistan Islamabad 167,410,000 10.5
4 Bangladesh Dhaka 133,540,000 8.4
5 Nigeria Abuja 77,300,000 4.8
6 Egypt Cairo 76,990,000 4.8
7 Iran Teheran 73,570,000 4.6
8 Turkey Ankara 71,330,000 4.5
9 Algeria Algiers 34,730,000 2.2
10 Morocco Rabat 31,940,000 2

Notice that Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. - do not even make the list, and comprise less than 2% of the world's Muslims.

I think that perhaps Mr. Rand Paul forgot about Turkey, a Muslim NATO country where the U.S. has a huge military base.

Banning immigration from certain countries might make some sense, but banning about a billion people due to their religious preference? Yeah, great "logic".....

Does it make sense to let in even a single person from any of those countries until say, every Canadian or Australian that wants to come to America has done so? We have a certain amount of slots for legal immigration every year, but the way in which we allocate those slots is utterly idiotic. The best solution would be a preference system that accomplishes what Rand is talking about in a more intelligent way, but absent that, this is the second best alternative.

What way is the immigration in this country allocated? and be specific about how its utterly idiotic. Thanks :)
