It's about time.
EXCLUSIVE — RAND PAUL ON TENNESSEE TERROR: RESTRICT IMMIGRATION FROM MUSLIM NATIONS
by MATTHEW BOYLE 17 Jul 2015

HOUSTON, Texas — Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a 2016 GOP presidential candidate, told Breitbart News in an exclusive interview here that he wants to restrict immigration from predominantly Muslim countries after the Chattanooga, Tennessee, terrorist attack.

Paul said in an interview backstage at a rally his presidential campaign is holding inside the Hyatt Regency here in downtown Houston:

"I’m very concerned about immigration to this country from countries that have hotbeds of jihadism and hotbeds of this Islamism. There was a program in place that Bush had put in place—it stood for entry-exit program from about 25 different countries with a lot of Islamic radicals, frankly. I think there does need to be heightened scrutiny. Nobody has a right to come to America, so this isn’t something that we can say ‘oh their rights are being violated.’ It’s a privilege to come to America and we need to thoroughly screen those who are coming."
The alleged shooter in the Chattanooga incident—which claimed the lives of four U.S. marines, whom he allegedly murdered in the terror attack—was named Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez. The 24-year-old was born in Kuwait and immigrated to the United States before he opened fire in Chattanooga, killing four Marines.

Paul also told Breitbart News about another similar incident regarding foreigners from the Middle East who were placed in Kentucky via immigration programs for refugees—and tried to, before getting caught, buy military grade missiles…

Of course, Congressman Ron Paul wrote such a bill over 12 years ago!

H.R.488 Terror Immigration Elimination Act of 2003
Terror Immigration Elimination Act of 2003 - Prohibits issuance without presidential review of a student, training, or vocational visa, or diversity visa, to an alien who is a national of: (1) Saudi Arabia; (2) a country that supports terrorism; or (3) a country that is not cooperating fully with United States' antiterrorism efforts.

Yes! I like it! This will probably irk lots of libertarians, but I think it's the right thing to do, and I believe many Republicans will be all for it. There's absolutely no reason to be importing Syrians and Iraqis here by the thousands.

there needs to be some sort of exception for religious minorities (Christians) , and those who worked for the USA (i.e. translators in the Iraq war) ; but in general this is long overdue.

A lot of people want to get away from that stuff, don't you think? I'm not sure about this.. Is there no way to screen the applicants?

Kind of too little too late. Maybe someone should've thought about that when they were issuing visas like candy and putting Americans out of work in the process.

Terrorists don't immigrate and fill out applications legally. They just cross the Mexico/US border. Restricting immigration for those doing it the correct way, only serves to punish the law abiding people. Much like gun control, punishes only those who wish to obey the law, whereas the criminals will always have illegal guns.

Except that all the attacks and failed attacks in the US thus far have been from legal immigrants or visa holders, and none of them have been by people who just crossed the border illegally. At some point you have to go on the data provided by reality rather than the gut feelings provided by emotion.

In general I don't like this. But the way the world is today I guess it makes sense at least temporarily.

Makes a bunch of sense to me.

Fix your culture Muslims.

At least up to the 16th century for starters.

This is a good point.

Seems pretty counterproductive. This is only going to widen the rift between them and us. One great way to warm people from those countries up to America is by letting them move here and experience it first hand. I bet most Americans would also be a lot less hateful of Iran if they experienced the place themselves.

Importing? No. Of course not, because importing is what you do with products that people buy, not people who engage in commerce and move freely.

But there are tons of great reasons for us to welcome more, rather than fewer, Syrians and Iraqis here.

One of the factors that brought down the Soviet Union was their people experiencing America.

Currently, no group of permanent immigrants (family-based and employment-based) from a single country can exceed 7% of the total amount of people
immigrating to the United States in a single year. This is not a quota that is set aside to ensure that certain nationalities make up 7% of immigrants,
but rather a limit that is set to prevent any immigrant group from dominating immigration patterns to the United States.

I guess Rand wants to designate certain countries and limit them to 0% immigration.

"Muslim Countries"? WTF does that mean? Any country where the majority of people are muslim? That's silly. There are ethnic Christian and Jewish communities all over the mideast and in Africa. The newest "bad guy", according to the State propaganda outlets, "Syria" (if I may borrow the absurd convention of referring to nations as if they were animate nouns), is home to one of the world's oldest Christian communities. Iran is home to a lot of religious communities, including jews and Christians.

I really need an updated Newspeak dictionary...

I see what Rand is doing. He's trying to make a pro-American, populist argument to get war hawks to think differently about intervention. I still don't agree with this, though.

So, first, a different side of the immigration problem - if you give amnesty to illegals from say, Mexico,
then it would be against existing policy anyway - that'd be over the 7% strict limit and those Mexico immigrants dominate. It has already happened!

Back to Rand's proposal - even IF it is only 1 % from Kuwait - where the Chattanooga terrorist, or his family, were from -
Rand wants it 0 % - if he puts Kuwait on his no immigration list. Is this do-able (?)

Also, CNN reports :
Jordanian sources said Abdulazeez had been in Jordan as recently as 2014 visiting an uncle.
He visited Kuwait and Jordan in 2010, Kuwait's Interior Ministry said.

Friends said he wasn't the same after the visits.
