Wrong again Rand.

So, Bernie has free stuff on one side. Rand has hard work on the other.

I'll take the free stuff, thx

Those darned Swedes and Norwegians, killing millions of people with their socialized medicine...

So move there if that's what you want. Socialism is fine if it's voluntary. But using government to force people into bondage is never the best plan.

Capitalism forces people into bondage as well, just with their money. Take for instance these drug companies buying rights to drugs and hiking prices 1000 fold or more.

Is this your first day here, son?

Capitalism is a voluntary exchange of goods and services. It is far and away the most efficient method of distributing resources and has lifted more people out of poverty than all other economic systems combined.

The government creates that problem with the massive expense of the FDA approval process that makes producing generics cost prohibitive.

I just can't get over the disconnect of this sentiment. Socialism would force us to buy that same medicine for the same price, just not for ourselves.

what the f....

Guess we have a lot of characters on RPF. I really honestly thought everyone here understood capitalism...Oh well, score for diversity!

Wealthy nations can get away with socialism for a while, but eventually people become dependent, the people have all of their wealth sucked out of them and the system crashes.

If you give 20 people 1 dollar each and then lock them in a room for a year, when you come back you will have 1 person with $19 and 19 people fighting over $1.
Another example: one of our earliest colonies was completely socialist and completely failed...there were not enough people willing to work to ensure the survival of the entire colony. Those that survived rearranged the framework and it became every man for himself. The colony not only survived but thrived.
Democratic socialists like to dismiss the human nature aspect of socialism, but human beings are what they are and if they have no incentive to prosper, they simply won't. Hope (aka capitalism) on the other hand is quite powerful.

In capitalism, no one has a "patent" on anything, so if Company A has $5000 prices, Company B can sell the same medicine for $50

With this logic lets apply it to a hypothetical situation. You're hundreds of miles from the nearest town and you've got a flat tire. You don't have enough water to make it back walking and you are relying on someone to give you a hand. A person comes up to you and sees you are desperate in this situation and decides to take advantage of you and is willing to sell the tire for $5000. You refuse and say its outrageous to think anyone would pay $5000 for a tire. So he leaves, and you say well someone else will be along to sell me a tire for cheaper. Here's the problem, what if nobody else comes around OR if they come but it was to late.

That's where the drug Daraprim comes into play, company buys the rights and hikes the price 5000% overnight. Sure, maybe in a few years another drug will be out that does the same thing Daraprim does and is a lot cheaper. But here's the problem, it's going to take more than 2 years for the new drug to be approved. So in the meantime this company is going to make BANK off this drug and if you can't afford it you're going to die or somebody else is going to pay the bill(omg free stuffz). Oh and I almost forgot to mention this same drug costs practically nothing in other countries like Canada and the UK.

blargh, blargh, blargh... Oh and I almost forgot to mention this same drug costs practically nothing in other countries like Canada and the UK.

I think you are getting around to seeing the real problem. Keep trying. You are close.
