Rand Paul: My Dad’s Supporters in Iowa Won’t Go for Ted Cruz

In Winterset, Iowa, Monday night, attendees at a Ted Cruz town hall sat through a 10-minute video of Ron Paul 2012 supporters talking about how they’re now backing the Texas senator’s presidential campaign.

It’s part of Mr. Cruz’s effort, having consolidated support from the state’s social conservatives, also to win over libertarian-minded supporters from Mr. Paul, who placed second in Iowa’s presidential caucuses in 2008 and third in 2012.

Ron Paul’s son has something to say about that.

“I don’t think that Ron Paul supporters are very excited about making the sand glow in the Middle East,” Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said, referring to Mr. Cruz’s oft-repeated declaration of what he would do to combat Islamic State militants.

In a Wall Street Journal interview Friday while he was riding from Des Moines to Oskaloosa, the younger Mr. Paul, who is running for president this year, said Mr. Cruz will lose support from people who backed his father for his claims that he expanded the government’s surveillance capabilities in the Freedom Act that passed last year.

Oh yea, Rand got him alright! /sarc

How about we hear that from Ron. Oh yea, he's a "liability" in Iowa to Rand's awful one issue campaign on cell phone data. What a joke. Bitching to WSJ is REALLY going to make a big diff Rand. Day late and a dollar short.

I hate Cruz so much. Just venting a bit here, I love the Pauls, support Rand 110%. But for god sakes, GET RON TO IOWA NOW.

One issue campaign?

I don't know why Ron Paul is still not campaigning for Rand in Iowa. In 2012 caucus he received 26K votes from a field of just 7 candidates. In this cycle we have 12 candidates and if Rand can secure his dad's numbers I guarantee he will win Iowa.

This.

I think what is more frustrating is that Ted is the only one in this campaign who even mentions Ron. Even name dropped Ron at a national debate. Now, Cruz does it cause he's a sleeze bag. But Rand won't even talk about him. This is the first I have even heard Rand mention his dad this entire campaign. Biggest mistake of the campaign imho.

Maybe Ron doesn't want to go through the campaign grind again?

Could be. And I would respect that. He's earned it.

But you and I know that is not the case. The campaign shut him out. Ron's not tired, he would be there in a heartbeat.

How come Rand doesn't show videos of Ron Paul supporters?

That might be how you perceive the campaign but you haven't followed the campaign at all. I am not even sure cell phone data is in the top 5 issues he mentions most let alone the single issue he focuses on. He mentions Ron Paul significantly more than Cruz. If I had to guess, I would bet that you are a Lew Rockwell/Tom Woods fan given that you say Rand doesn't mention Ron. I could be wrong, but I noticed comments like yours tend to come from a certain wing.

Maybe Rand and Ron both want Rand to stand on his own and not make it look like Rand has to have his Dad there to generate a campaign. Ron has already made it clear how how he feels about Rand's candidacy.

How do you know this, do you have some insider information? First I have heard of such a thing.

Ron wouldn't receive 26k votes in Iowa this cycle, not even close.

More candidates means more competition for those votes.

Most importantly, though, the electorate is in a very different mood this time: it's all about Mexicans and Muslims.

Any libertarian would struggle in that political environment.

...not to say that Rand's campaign couldn't have been run better, there's always room for improvement in any campaign, but I see no glaring errors.

A good point. I do believe that Ron's presence in Iowa would be additive to Rand numbers. And since the field is so deep, even if it's a small bump, it could help a lot. But you are right that the media has been masterful this election cycle at scaring the shit out everyday folks, and making non issues major ones. I don't hear many discussing our national debt anymore haha.

Were probably screwed either way, that's why I want to get Ron there. Let's go down swinging.

Rand wants to run his own campaign. It's really that simple. But for those who have never worked for their dad, it might be difficult to understand.

Lol, so true. I love my son and step sons but............

Ok, let's just let Ted Cruz run around Iowa and show Ron Paul videos. While Rand get's be his own man!!! What a win for everyone.

Working for his dad.....lol......he is running for President, not working for his dad's local insurance agency. WTF?

Hillary doesn't seem to have problem getting Bill on trail, maybe she doesn't want to be her own women. Or maybe she wants to be president.

How come Rand won't show Ron Paul video's at his campaign events? Or mention him? But Cruz does?

Are you comparing Hillary to Rand? Besides, Rand was never married to Ron...:p
