Rand Paul: GOP is 'responsible' for my debate exclusion

I would not be surprised in the slightest. Today I was going through some old notebooks when I came across my notes of the convention of the Republican Party of Davidson County back in 2009, or so. It was a joke.

The outgoing officers were not acting as impartion officials of the convention. They stated rules without explanation, and did not follow them. In the long delays, they were not presiding at their positions, but we speaking off the record to all and sundry and were clearly annoyed that anyone would question procedure.

They did not have provision for a tie, and did not clearly state the result was final. They disqualified delgates out of hand if they did not embrace the establishment point of view. The first vote was a tie, and there was to be a runoff. The rules were clearly stated and ballots would not be issued if we were not in our seats.Liberty delegates were rather marginalized and were scattered all over the room. Oddly, our table was all liberty people and was right next to what was where the Chairman and his minions did their deeds.

Kathleen Starnes was standing when she was handed a ballot. I can be heard on video commenting, and I got louder as the infraction continued. The parliamentarian turned around to see me, and looked at Ms. Starnes, but did nothing.

Ms. Starnes did not take her seat to vote at that time. Instead, she walked the length of the room to retrieve a delecate who was out in the hall on her phone. It was not until they were back in their seats that we were instructed to vote.

The outgoing officers had not given a very firm structure for collecting ballots, so they began to tear up ballots (clearly seen on video tape). I was one inch from throwing a good old-fashioned hissy fit. After a brief conversation with Matt Collins, I went to the outgoing chair to tell him what I saw and that I planned to introduce a motion that the vote be stricken. He dropped his head into his hands and said, "Oh, sh!t."

The events of the next few weeks were interesting, to say the least, including the fact that they were going to reconvene at a law firm downtown and were not going to contact any of the delegates. Fortunately for Matt, he knew how to mobilize his people, so we hustled downtown. That was clearly not what the establishment wanted, so they held a vote to set a date to reconvene. Of course, this did not work out well for Matt because the liberty candidates all work and did not make the second date. In addition, there was a whispering campaign, so people showed out in force to support the establishment.

It does not surprise me in the least to hear of GOP corruption. If they had a shred of integrity, they would enbrace liberty principles and stop engineering elections to make it easy for them to maintain the status quo.
