Rand Paul Bolsters Libertarian Bona Fides, Delays Decision on 2016

CNN, quoting The Independent, reports that Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has made the decision to run in 2016 — for reelection to the Senate.

During a visit to Kentucky, Paul told reporters that his decision to seek a second term in the Senate was certain, adding that any decision on a presidential run would “come later.” Paul echoed these remarks in an interview with The New American, saying that the call on his presidential candidacy wouldn’t come before 2014.

In the meantime, however, Paul admitted to The New American that he would continue visiting primary states, feeling out the popularity among Republicans of his libertarian-leaning policy positions.

I have a feeling he isn't going to run. The GOP is going against Hillary and he isn't a woman or black. If were going to split the youth and women vote Rand needs to pull his head out of his culo and start talking to the youth. If he comes out against marijuana and Hillary doesn't it's OVER.

Also I know Rands demo's - but this is 2013. Where are all the votes going to be in 3 more years. We know what the media can do.

So what's the plan, majority or delegates ?

Quite important, in my opinion. Very much a piecemeal approach. I can't get inside Paul's head, but I'm sure he and his supporters, even folks here, know that he and his allies in Congress- however many that may be- won't be able to reformat, change and mold the GOP for the better overnight. Better to do it step by step while he's visiting these states and getting on the ground to meet with local GOP parties.

Not only does this give him a chance to get his message out early, but he can help expand the Party through inclusion of others so the GOP isn't just the Party of white people. At the same time, it keeps him visible and not marginalized, even if that may be the case if media folks turn on him. For my money, these visits are not about the 2016 election, they're about sending the message that he made clear at CPAC- the GOP of old has grown stale and moss covered and it's time for a change of pace. Now if only we could start seeing results of that message in voter outreach.

Keep in mind, assuming the next president is a two termer, Rand could be thinking of 1 more term in the Senate, and would get a head start on a 2024 campaign 2 years early...

He sounds pretty confident he will be on the ballot in November 2016 for US Senate so either KY changes its ballot access law or Jim Bunning runs for president (in Kentucky)

with the amount of noise he's been making, along with the government-skeptical voices, quite frankly the fate of this movement won't rest on whether he runs in 2016. no matter who the upcoming president will be, with the internet and growing attitude of government skepticism, i can see him having a hard time governing. but really the last thing we need is an idiot in the office espousing feminist ideas

The internet? The internet supported Obama. Government has done nothing but grow since its invention.

that was predominantly still msm-dominated news cycle with internet being a side show to espouse what's already given a pass on cable tv without much skepticism.. today is the reverse and we've seen many news pieces slip through the crack which they have no control over. tv time slot is becoming filled just discussing what bursted into viral topics online

He'll run. Everything he's done for the last 3 years has been with 2016 in mind.

Rand will run in 2016. It'll be a blast. I can't wait for the debates and all of the talking head show appearances. Rand will take no prisoners. I expect unbelievable fireworks.

keep in mind platforms like youtube only started ~2006 and even then the video resolution and other aspects remained barely tolerable compared to cable tv until as recently as 2009/10 ish, so the 'government has been growing forever and politics never quite solved it' response doesn't quite work when you apply the same logic to internet.

it is reasonable to give some time for this technology to grow and take root in people's lives. 2016 will be the first election whereby you can say a reasonably matured internet-based news delivery will have a direct impact in determining who the president will be.

and as compromise mentioned, liberals weren't nearly as enthusiastic about obama in 2012. internet didn't create the frenzy for him as it did in 08. i can see hillary having an extremely difficult time in 2016 when people put her under the microscope. i mean, she voted for the iraq war, for christ sake. the sole selling point early for obama was being the rare exceptions on stage who didn't vote for the iraq war, in either party, along with ron paul and dennis kucinich. that was a major point to allow him triumph over hillary in democratic primaries. curious question whether feminism is a regressive force in this country or not, durr. this is the woman they put up for worship while we're back to square one, talking about iraq war in 2013.. jesus christ
