Rand: If We Got Same Treatment As Fiorina, We Meet Criteria For Debate

Kentucky Senator and Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY)93% stated, “we think if they give us the same treatment that Carly Fiorina was given last time, that you measure from debate to debate, that we actually do meet the criteria already” in response to questions over whether he would make the stage for CNN’s debate on Friday’s “O’Reilly Factor” on the Fox News Channel.

Rand said, “Well, we think if they give us the same treatment that Carly Fiorina was given last time, that you measure from debate to debate, that we actually do meet the criteria already. So, you know, we’ll have those discussions and we’ll see what comes from it. But we hope that we’re treated fairly. I have every expectation that I will be treated fairly, but we want the same and equal treatment that other candidates have gotten in the past. We have a first-tier campaign, and we don’t plan on being labeled by the mainstream media anything less.”

Earlier, Rand addressed remarks by fellow GOP candidate Donald Trump about closing up parts of the Internet and “foolish people” citing the First Amendment. He stated, “It’s the first time I’ve heard people called foolish who want to defend your right to continue to have freedom of speech. No, I think it’s one of our precious liberties, and it scares me to think of an authoritarian getting in charge of our country who would say, ‘Oh, we just need to police the Internet and don’t let people say things that we might disagree with.’ No, I think we need to defend the country, but eliminating the things that we stand for like freedom of speech is not the way to go about it.”

He added, “I think we should do good investigation. So, for example, I’m all for looking at the records of terrorists. I’ve only asked for one thing that we ought to do, which is constitutional. Ask a judge for a warrant, put an individual’s name on it, so I want to look at more records of individual terrorist suspects, but I don’t want to look at every American’s records.”

Rand also said, “I don’t think we ought to have a religious test for who comes to the country, but also, at the same time, I think Hillary Clinton saying — or not being able to say who the enemy is, not declaring the words ‘radical Islam’ is equally as bad. what i have proposed is actually a stoppage or a moratorium on immigration from about 34 countries that have radical Islamists, or terrorist movements, because we need to know who is coming here and what their intentions are.”

They have the opportunity to do the right thing, and this a face saving out for them.

If they were able to get onto the main debate.. how will he turn things around? Isnt the caucuses approaching and assuming he makes it into this debate, how can he bring himself up for the following debates?

Its clear that this may be his last debate at the main table.

IF they treat us the same as Carly. IF.

SCOTUS hasn't ruled on affirmative action yet...

Don't count on too much happening with Rand during the debate. The headlines for this debate are going to be maybe 90% about how Trump got his ass handed to him (whether he actually did or not) and he once again acts mad and threatens to quit. They are going to go down the line and ask everyone what they think about banning Muslims. Then they will bring out Fareed Zakaria to ask Trump why he wants to ban Muslims.

Polls are not rated for accuracy until around a month or so before the voting starts. They will be forced to start getting more realistic soon. Rand is correct - they have a 1st tier campaign organization. That said, accuracy ratings didn't stop the polls in Kentucky from being off 13% right before Bevin's election... so who knows how much they can continue to fudge.

This is bullsh*t...

Forecasting Tuesday’s GOP Debate: Who's In, Who's Out, Who's On The Bubble

The Headliners

As of now, five candidates will make the main stage debate based solely on their national numbers: Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush. All have been on the mainstage for every GOP debate thus far.

Past debate criteria have considered only national polls, meaning these five would have had the stage to themselves.

But with CNN expanding its criteria to include state polls, Carly Fiorina, John Kasich and Chris Christie will join them, based on their support in New Hampshire. (Iowa does not add any candidates to the stage, as support there is much more concentrated among the frontrunners.)

Christie and Kasich do far better in New Hampshire than in national polls. Christie continued a string of good results in New Hampshire with the new WBUR poll, out Friday morning, placing second behind Trump. His 12 percent is his best showing to date in the state, boosting his average since Oct. 29 to 7.7 percent, almost double the debate threshold. Kasich meanwhile has held a steady place in the middle of the cluster of candidates trailing Trump, easily high enough to qualify.

Strength in Iowa or New Hampshire should not be underestimated in terms of its potential importance. Both states play outsized roles in the nominating contests of both parties. Since 1972, when Iowa and New Hampshire were established as the first nominating contests on the calendar, just one candidate from either party (Bill Clinton in 1992) has won the nomination without winning either state. Christie and Kasich can both take comfort from holding support in one of the two first-to-vote states, as opposed to a hypothetical national primary.

Setting The Kiddie Table

Compared to the main stage, the bar for making the second-tier debate is much lower, requiring just 1 percent on any four qualifying polls done nationally or in either of the two states.

As of this writing, there have been 20 polls that fit the bill — plenty of chances for a candidate with even an iota of support to make the cut.

Poll-count

As of this writing, five candidates have cleared the threshold: Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Lindsey Graham and George Pataki.

That leaves only Jim Gilmore on the outside looking in, a familiar spot for him. He received 0 percent in every qualifying poll conducted during the target time frame.

On The Bubble

The window for including polls closes this Sunday at 5 p.m.. There are rumors of several more polls to be released by that time, which could alter the picture. Paul could still climb to the main stage, most likely if another Iowa poll shows him at 6 percent or better. And Fiorina could be relegated to the lower tier if her string of relatively weak showings continues. Her place onstage is due largely to her earlier surge; her numbers recently have been less than stellar. That leaves Paul hoping for more polls to materialize over the weekend, while Fiorina would be content if things stayed the way there are.

Doesn't 3.5 in Iowa do it for us? I thought we needed 4, and 3.5 rounds to 4?

There's nothing specific in their criteria that says they will do rounding, but in the Fox Business debate that language was there.

Either way, it's an embarrassing failure not to achieve these thresholds, especially in Iowa where his father won and NH where his father came in second only to a favorite son from a neighboring state.

Where'd the support go? Why can't Rand rally but a fraction of Ron's?

the bright side is IF he gets the kiddie table, rand will have more time to speak. this might actually be better if not just for one debate.

Does anyone know when the Des Moines Register/Bloomberg poll is released? Popcorn.gif
