I will say that when the attacks are over-the-top ridiculous it tends to help more than hurt. In 2010 my opponent dropped $100k on television ads to tell voters that I would take away their right to vote for US Senate on account of I was critical about the 17th Amendment. Best recourse is to put something on the front page of your website (where people will go look you up out of curiosity from the opponents smear ad) not as a direct response (voters like proactive not reactive) but what makes the opponents charges look stupid and ridiculous. So curious voters checking out the Hightower site based on the opponents ads, will come away thinking the opponent is a moron and a clown.
