R.I.P. - Neil Armstrong

RIP

Here's what REALLY bothered me:

US News got his name wrong when they first posted it!

RIP.I have my strong opinions about NASA post-cold war, but for the original man on the moon I have a lot of respect for his accomplishment that not many have gotten to experience.

Rest in Peace Neil Armstrong! Whether you actually landed on the moon when NASA said you did or not; whether you actually saw a UFO in outer space or not; we as Americans salute your bootprint and your entire life!

:)

Let's be honest, though. Armstrong was in the right place at the right time. What he did could have been accomplished by anyone in his position; even some of us on this board could undergo a similar training regiment and assume the mantle of Apollo 11 astronaut. After all, what human being would pass up the opportunity to walk on the moon? If anything, honor the scientists who built the Apollo rockets. Especially a guy like Van Braun, who single-handedly built the US rocket program. That's a rare skill; that's true talent. Same goes for scientists like Newton, Pasteur, and Tesla. Rare minds who dramatically change the direction of history. If we honored them a little more and those who take advantage of their work a little less do you think we'd go a long way towards advancing the species.

Yes, any of us could have taking the terrifying risk of the first ever Moon landing and risked our lives for such a mission, but he did.

The engineers did a great job, but they weren't the ones who had to put their lives on the line. What they did was noble and good, but not heroic. Heroism involves risk.

I find the moon landing worship in here a tad disappointing. I'm guessing the following statement will be heretical in many people's eyes, but here goes: if I could undo everything NASA has ever done, I would. The reason is simple: it is funded by theft -- hundred of billions of dollars of theft (over the years). That's not something I can support in good conscience.

Understand that I'm not knocking Armstrong himself; I'm sure he was an exceptional person, and I'm sad that such a person has been lost. I am just knocking socialized aeronautics. I want voluntarily-funded, free market aeronautics.

^I wonder if that will realistically ever happen. You can talk about Branson's space tourism yet to happen or Space ship one.

Armstrong fought in the Korean war, his piloting skills gave him that edge. He was lucky to survive that war.

I don't believe Armstrong was in anyway a Libertarian. He was employed by Nasa. I remember reading some interviews about him, and he was struck by the shuttle accident in 2003, he said "it hurts." When he gave an interview in 2001, just a week after the attacks in New york state he said that people just get on with reality, and that young people don't believe history is worth looking into as far too many see it as having happened before their lives.
