Blasio already facing backs of many Police is under pressure again:

N.Y. mayor must outlaw dangerous circumcision rite before another baby dies

Dec. 31, 2014 | 4:20 PM

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio needs to be more concerned about the death of Jewish children and less concerned about the clout of ultra-Orthodox rabbis who have done nothing to prevent those deaths. His administration needs to do whatever is necessary to outlaw metzitzah b’peh (MBP), the controversial circumcision ritual according to which the mohel, the ritual circumciser, cleans the wound by sucking the blood from the circumcised penis with his mouth. This is a matter of great urgency. Last week, New Yorkers learned that yet another newborn has contracted herpes after undergoing a brit milah, a ritual circumcision, that included MBP. The failure to put an end to a practice that is killing and maiming children is political cowardice. De Blasio is not the first mayor to confront the problem; he inherited it from his predecessor, who should have done something to stop it and did not. Nonetheless, it is on de Blasio’s plate now, and the city looks to him to find a solution before more lives are lost or irreversibly damaged.
The risks of MBP are well-known. Jewish religious authorities have been worried about the health dangers since the 1830s. More recently, health officials have noted that when oral suction is carried out by someone infected with oral herpes, the procedure is potentially fatal to infants, who have an undeveloped immune system. Israeli pediatricians raised the issue in 2004, and in 2005, the Commissioner of the New York Department of Public Health called for MBP to be halted. In 2012, the department’s deputy commissioner for disease control declared emphatically that “there is no safe way to perform oral suction on an open wound in a newborn.”

Capital New York-Dec 23, 2014
Metzitzah b'peh involves a mohel sucking the blood directly from the wounded penis... two infants have died and at least two more have ...

Why is this government's job? Is the assumption here that Jewish parents don't care about their children? Or that they are mentally incabable of evaluating the risk?

What's the point of the OP?

Point is simple, pressure mounting on Blasio... first from policemen turning backs on him and now from child health activists.
Are you suggesting this is not news worthy?

You know what? That's just disgusting. Everybody knows that if these were Muslims the religious right would be having a field day with this story. If people take pictures of their babies taking a bath they are at risk from CPS for child pornography, but a rabbi sucking the blood off of a baby's penis is okay?

If parents are going to be arrested for putting their children at risk for letting them stay in a hot car, if parents are being arrested for spanking their children and leaving whelps, then why give a free pass to a practice that has apparently led to STD transmission to infants and even death? I'm all for parental rights. But if the state is going to police parenting then it should at least be consistent.

So since the state has intervened to some extent in an area, that justifies MORE intervention? I think we can all see where that logic leads.

Just as a cultural note - modern Americans are about the most uptight, squeamish, sexually-repressed, faint-hearted, culturally-bigoted people that have ever lived. It is a wonder to me that we are even able to reproduce.

Yes, I am. Seems like a rather minor, local issue.

That is a subjective view , current/past NYC Mayors have been involved/dragged in this issue.

But more interestingly, the article seems rather heavily slanted in favor of government intervention. Hence my question.

Assumption here is that US is a nanny police state and NYC is in the center of it.
If you took out discussions relating to "government intervention", probably 99% of discussions here would be gone.

Adding that NYC Mayor is a walking talking example of "government intervention" in matters where it has no business to be intervening.

NYC Mayor: “part of my job description is to be a defender of Israel.”

Perhaps his job descriptions needs to be expanded to make him a defender of lives of voiceless babies dying as a result of primitive practices in his own city.

Let's make it relevant. The article clearly advocates government intervention. By posting it are YOU supporting that position?

At the bottom of my page is now an ad for "The Las Vegas Mohel". He purports to offer "Skilled & gentle touch, fast-healing & beautiful ceremonies"

Yes, if posting a news about something translates to supporting that something.

I haven't really studied the issue in detail or read medical research on this, but seems bit creepy/dangerous after reading news of child deaths caused by this primitive practice in otherwise modern NYC.
I won't protest if Blasio got under more pressure as I see him as a lapdog of neocon lobbies.

It is a big world and in it there are many cultures where it is a common practice for mothers to suck their male baby's penis to comfort him. My friend, a Vietnam vet, told me he saw it first hand in Vietnam. I can't look up any citations for this at the moment, since I am at work. But you can.

I question the motives of bringing up this topic at all. It's a culture-specific tradition that affects no one else, what business is it of yours?
