So here is some information about Presidency 5 in Orlando, FL.

-FOX News Debate is Sept.22nd at Rosen Center
-The straw poll will be on Sept. 24th
-In between, the RPOF will hold its quarterly meeting and the candidates will be hosting events to court straw poll voters.
-There are a total of 3,500 voting delegates and 700 backup delegates. About 30% of the delegates are either automatic (legislators, congressmen and members of the RPOF executive committee) or selected by local party leaders, but 70% will be chosen by lottery at county "caucuses" around the state held between June 15 and August 1.
-The only requirement to be eligible to become a delegate is to be registered Republican in the state of Florida as of February 1st, 2011.
-All delegate applicants must register online by June 10th, and applicants must be PHYSICALLY PRESENT at the county caucus in the county where they are registered in order to win the lottery.
-Once you have been selected to be a delegate, the fee to participate is $175, which does not include your hotel room.

Hadn't actually seen the requirement about "in the state of Florida" anywhere, but since it's been posted and reposted I won't bother going to this thing. It's a pay-to-play thing that probably won't get much publicity unless someone ELSE wins

Uh, OK. Presidencies 1, 2 and 3 accurately predicted the Republican nominee. There was no straw poll at Presidency 4 in 2007 (there was a civil war over rules between Romney and McCain factions within the Florida GOP leadership so they agreed to cancel the straw poll). Every news article I've read says that Presidency 5 will have almost as huge of an impact on who wins Florida as the Ames straw poll has on who wins the IA caucus. You only pay the registration fee if you win the lottery to become a delegate from your county. I.e., the Florida GOP does not make more money the more people who register. So in a sense, it is less of a "scam" than CPAC or the SRLC, all of which you've participated in. What do you have against this straw poll?

As the OP states, 25% of the delegates are appointed by county party leadership, but the remaining 75% are chosen by random lottery at county caucuses that occur sometime between the registration deadline (June 10) and the straw poll. As long as you don't go to the county caucuses with "Ron Paul 2012" blazoned all over your body, they have no way of cheating against us.

Writing your name on an index card, basically, and pulling it out of a box. You fill it out, you put it in the box.

I guess they could yank it out of the box. I doubt there'll be enough people in my area doing this for it to even matter.

Would that mean it's relatively easy for Ron Paul supporters in Florida to become delegates and help dr p get some positive publicity by winning this thing in one of his weaker states?

Even if it just gets one 24 hr news cycle in the Florida papers and tv, it would be totally worth it to win, IMO. $100 or whatever it is isnt cheap, but i think it would give a good return on investment.

Yes, very easy. No, I haven't see any evidence that anyone at C4L or YAL is taking this seriously.

It would be much more than a 24 hour news cycle. While not as big as Ames, this straw poll is a huge deal in Florida. Because it's been a while since the last one (as I said, it was canceled in 2007), it isn't on anyone's radar (though you can be absolutely sure it's on Romney's radar), but when it happens, it will be big.

The official campaign could very easily pay the registration costs for any supporters who become delegates. It would possibly even pay for transportation to Orlando.

That newsletter only mentions being a registered Republican in the state of Florida, versus being a registered Florida Republican (in other words, someone who just moved here but has been GOP for years and is now changing their registration to Florida does not seem explicitly excluded).

Don't worry about it. I will make sure you have a ride. We are thinking of renting buses and have them start in four sections of the State. We will have at least a Ron Paul Road Rally car pool.

I'm curious about what brought you to these forums and how you found this thread, as it might provide some insight on how to reach more Ron Paul supporters for this effort.

As for your question, maybe contact the Florida GOP if you do not get an email with your county's caucus details soon.

Get in contact with your county Republican Executive Committee (REC). For example, mine is OCREC, for Orange County. They hold the lottery, and they'll tell you the date they draw. It will be mid to late June, and you must attend. You don't pay anything unless you're chosen.
