I was wondering what everyone's preferred form of taxation was for a limited federal government. Assume that all taxes will provide the same amount of funding for the government. Also assume only one of these taxes is needed for complete funding

Personally, I would prefer a Value Added Tax, slightly over the standard sales tax.

No damned tax at all!

If the federal government can't get by the way they did before there was a tax on peoples labor, then they should reduce in size till they can.

Voluntary donations to government services which are essential to protecting individuals from aggression, fluctuating sales tax is absolutely necessary.

Both would be on the local, state and federal level, with separate treasuries.

Well that kind of takes away from the "must be paid for" part of the scenario.

Yeah, but what happens when things "must be paid for" and we just sit and do nothing. :p

Alternative? I'll throw in voluntary contributions into the fray. The government will need to rely on advertising to the public for funding; the people, if in support, will contribute, if not, won't contribute, it's a really great way for people to truly vote with their money.

Support government agenda? give money

Don't support government agenda? don't give money

Somewhat support government agenda? give...some money

There will always be free riders. oh well. We could deal with the gaps with usage fees like, tolls, buses, stamps, etc. but we shouldn't keep out free market competition if we keep these government functions in tact.

This isn't a libertarian answer but I still like it.
I think Ruch people mainly have money by "moving around" other money then they must have too much.
Because of that capital gains and property taxes would be the best.
A wealth tax could also work but I don't know how that would be implemented.
Of course a sales tax(fairtax) with a big enough rebate could work.
It would have to be high enough to offset the poor peoples
aspect that it would have too high an affect on them.

I disagree. Welcome to the boards, Mr. Sloth

1. Optional user fees for specific services offered
2. Volunteer donations
3. Left overs of estates with no rightful inheritor
4. Fines

No forced taxation. Ever.

He never says that. All he says about tariffs is that they were used instead of the income tax before 1913.

Here's an article written by Ron Paul himself

Protectionism vs. Liberty

Don't let the facts get in the way

Interesting article, I guess I was confused when I heard him talking about the use of tariffs before 1913 and thought he approved of it over income taxes.

I see I was wrong about that and I apologize.

I still have to wonder what is going to happen when this country loses all of it's industrial base and is no longer able to build what it needs in the event of an emergency like an invasion or some other war where we can not import what we need to fight it.

The Fed's loose dollar policies have more to do with manufacturing going overseas than the lack of taxation or tariffs, I believe--we're able to cheat the world by exporting are inflation, then reaping the benefits of it.

I understand what your saying though and it's one thing I worry about in this country.....the way I see it though, at this point, no matter what we do, we're screwed.
