Gingrich losing support; Romney gains.

AP

Having been the target of a series of attack from both conservative columnists on the right as well as from second tier candidates such as Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich has seen his polling numbers slip dramatically in Iowa even as he retains a small national advantage over Governor Mitt Romney in the latest round of polling.

With the newest polling indicating a Romney surge, conservative commentators suggest that the Republican Party may finally be embracing Mitt Romney as the candidate they knew they would select all along.

Says one talking head, "While Mitt Romney has made mistakes in the past, he would be a vast improvement over Barack Obama, and can unite the Republican Party as a series of high profile endorsements has revealed. He can lead us to victory in November and represents a clear alternative to the current regime."
