Forty percent of Brown University students say they are LGBT, suggesting social contagion
I suppose you're correct that it could be an indicator that the social stigma regarding being LGB is gone. But 38%???
No. It's a social thing - not an orientation thing. I see it all around through my own experiences, from conversations with younger people, from conversations with my LGBT friends. Living in the Bay Area and being on a college campus multiple times a week as an open gay man, I see and hear a lot.
It's fine. Young people do what young people do. Same as every generation. However, as someone in their 40s, I look askance at it. If someone told you they were qu33r when I was younger, you'd assume they were gay or bisexual. It was a way of identifying that, hey, I'm in your dating pool.
It does not mean that anymore.
And it's fine. I'm just glad I've aged out of having to navigate it, because it's less upfront than it used to be. A lot of mixed signals. Imagine being a gay teen, and a boy you have a crush on identifies as qu33r but in reality is heterosexual. There's a "leading on" component to things. It's almost counterintuitively become a little more difficult for young people to discern who to date, because they're being told one thing, but the reality is another.
